What kinda thread is this for a legacy 928 event?

How about a new one that's a bit more informational, Mark? You know, with dates, times, agenda, details ... etc.

I have some new folks I wanted to introduce to the event, but this is a disappointing first impression.

Randy --

FWIW, these events have always been organized by the community, including the activities and events. Keith and Dan worked with Mark in the first years to get things going, but neither to my knowledge has a 928 anymore. Mark graciously hosts Sharktoberfests, providing the location space, has in the past supplied lunch, and arranges the group rates at a nearby hotel for out-of-town guests. The date and times of the Saturday event have been traditionally set in the third weekend in October, a date originally defined based on Mark's race schedule. As always, it's up to the rest of the group to plan and execute any special displays or demonstration, group dinners, special activities, etc.

All:
What were you thinking about as far as agenda items? What would visitors like to do or see while in the area? Any particular things on the cars that could use discussion or demonstration? We have a couple weeks to go, but some things may take more than a few minutes to put together. Got a tough problem that could use a team diagnostics effort? Post up here anything particular that you'd like to see or do as part of the Saturday schedule.

You are correct Dr Bob
Dan and Keith were originators of Sharktoberfest 12 plus years ago and did a fantastic job. Their help is dearly missed.

Here's what might have happened.

Mark could have created a new thread that includes a title with the event name and dates, with the post including the event details. Then he could have sent a PM to Hacker asking to have it stickied - like the hosts of Sharks in the Mountains, Frenzy, etc. do every year.

Sorta like this -

Here's the 928 International 2017 Sharktoberfest event flyer and link to the event details:

I'm local so I will be at Sharktoberfest for sure. It was so great meeting some of the group at the Werks Reunion concourse in Monterey this summer, I'm looking forward to this get together.
I would imagine people have plotted a nice half day trip, but if not, my suggestion is a run down Ortega Highway (or some similar fast moving canyon roads that may be closer to Anaheim) and maybe a stop in Laguna Beach for a meal, cocktail and/or a drive down a stretch of very picturesque, but slow moving PCH.

The thing about going out to battle Sat. afternoon traffic for a crawl up a road..is most of us are driving 3-7hrs each way to get there.

Years ago, people stuck around after lunch and worked on stuff, learned from others doing...just hung out.

Then the "lets go...sit in traffic" things ate away at it..now we have half to a third of the people show up, because it all just ends at lunch. People used to drive 2 days to get there. But not anymore, not for a 4hr meet & greet.

Organize something for Sunday AM...then it doesn't take away from socializing, relaxing, and nobody's beat up from the fun LA experience for dinner Sat night.

What this really needs is a local to organize a dinner Sat night.

What to do Sat afternoon...I dunno, lets see how fast Marks guys can tear apart a 928.

In the early days of the event, Saturday was a full day of visits and clinic efforts. We would gather for a no-host dinner somewhere. "Fun Drives" happened early on Sunday morning so minimum traffic issues. Folks could roll home from the Fun Drive at any convenient point. As more folks were spending more time commuting home though, fewer were participating in the Fun Drives. To allow more out-of-area drivers to enjoy the SoCal driving destinations, Fun Drives were moved to Saturday afternoon. It Turns Out that you can't please all the people all the time.

Organizing fun drives for our group can grow to be bigger than a breadbox in a hurry. In the early episodes, we ended up spending roadside time with cars that weren't ready for the drive. A day or so of planning and pre-run, and arranging for a lunch stop somewhere large enough to handle a group whose size was unknown until the group actually gathered for the ride and we could do a head-count. Then there's accident and recovery management, never a fun task but it happens.

All the events and activities within and surrounding them are enthusiast-organized. Wizzdumb acquired during some early project management adventures: "Anything You Can Do Better Than I Can Do, You Can Do!". If you see something that could use some improvement, PLEASE take it over and improve it. Grab the ball, run with it! The event "organizers" be each and all of us! Nobody here has ever, to my knowledge, passed on an opportunity to help. Good event stuff doesn't "just happen", it's the result of some thought and planning, plus execution by the thinkers and planners and their gathered team. Think and plan, gather a team! This doesn't apply just to Sharktoberfest but to every 928 event and gathering. Just Do It!

Default Official Sharktoberfest Website

Sometimes we forget that the Sharktoberfest 928 gathering continues to have its own website. Dan Bise, former/future 928 owner, event co-founder and lifefetime 928 enthusiast, maintains the Official Sharktoberfest Event Website here for everyone's benefit.

Great input. That's what this newbie needed. I do think the input about a drive being on Sunday morning makes sense unless a significant number of people are leaving before mid-day on Sunday.
I will take on the dinner planning Sunday night unless someone else has started the planning or if someone prefers they do it.
Could a few of you suggest a range of food cost per person that will minimize backlash at the organizer? Lastly, how far a distance from Embassy Suites would be acceptable, Anaheim is not known for their food, nightlife and ambience, just their Ducks NHL team, Greg's Precision global headquarters and of course Mark's 928 International.

Thanks for stepping up!

The dinner spectrum in the past has ranged from the Phoenix Club to a hot-dog-and-burgers place in Fullerton. The Spaghetti Factory in nearby Fullerton has a room that can sometimes be reserved for a group. In that same area there's a great pizza/italian restaurant in an old theater that's good, if they are still there. It's been a while since I dined regularly in that area. Good News is that there are some pretty good online resources for stuff like this. Consider that the Embassy Suites host hotel may work with the group to host dinner there. That makes it an easy stagger to the elevator for visiting guests, and there's a whole parking level area reserved for the 928 group. IIRC the hotel is owned by some 928 enthusiasts, so it all plays together.

Solid!

I think anywhere within 10mi is fair.

Cost isnt a huge issue, but "normal" for nice dining I suppose with options in the $20-40 range (from a salad to big eatin) not including bar drinks.

I like octoberfest ideas, but spouses might balk, can we ask for -a- area for us to sit together???

Just somewhere where everyone can sit at a few large tables and BS the night away.
