to replate or not to replate, that's the question
I have a couple of engine parts that I am not sure if I'll take them to the replater. One of them is the canister for (I think) the oil for the power steering. The sticker with type# will be lost in the process,The other one (don't know what it is) has a diaphragm that will probably be affected in the process. Perhaps cleaning and some clear coat is the safer route for this. Opninions?

If a part is only lightly corroded you may be able to cheat by removing the yellow passivate coating with Evapo-Rust or an acid dip, polishing the plating that was underneath the passivate and then dipping the part in a yellow passivate solution to restore the original appearance. There are two caveats - one is that the part has to be only slightly corroded and the second is that you will be polishing cadmium and cadmium dust is toxic and carcinogenic. Any polishing process used needs to be a wet process to avoid generating dust and protective gloves and a proper mask would be a good idea. I have done this with a few small parts and it works fine. You might be able to do it with the reservoir but the other part way too far gone.

You really can't beat the wow factor of freshly plated hardware. The steering reservoir is such a big part and looks amazing when finished. Do as much as you can all at once. I have many spare plated parts as it was cheaper to do them in bulk. It really makes the engine bay pop

Looks awesome. Where did you get your replacement stickers?
