Default 2017 Nevada Open Road Challenge ORR

Last Sunday I ran my 928 S4 in the Nevada Open Road Challenge in Ely, Nevada. Bill was unable to make it this time, so I made the trip alone.

I had entered the 170 mph class again, but was going to try and get a 175 mph average. I was hoping I had solved the overheating issues from last year and could run the whole course at the faster pace. If successful I plan to move up to 180 mph class.

As it turned out, I had a good run. The car held up nicely, no heat problems, engine ran solid, and the car handled great. All in all I met all my goals. I got a 175.0056 overall average, missing a perfect time by 0.0592 seconds. Of course there is no real 175 class in the SSCC, so I got a 3rd place in the 170 class. I hit an official 208.4 mph in the radar trap, as well as exceeding 200 in 4 places on the course.

I put a full write up and photo gallery on my site at:

I'll be post a couple of videos later, once I finish editing them.

Congratulations on your run and for solving the over heating problem. Now on to the 180 class.

Great result, thanks for posting.

Once these cars start making some power, cooling becomes the biggest problem...

"I signed up for the 170 mph average class again, but was going to try and run a 175 mph average. I had done the same thing in last years NORC, but overheating issues kept my speeds down, so I only ran a 172.4 mph average. Last summer I had added a third intercooler heat exchanger, added more vents in the hood and fenders, and water sprayers on the radiator, oil cooler, and main intercooler heat exchanger. I had also removed the headlights (which hung down in the way of the air flowing to the heat exchangers and install HID projector lights. I was hoping this would keep the heat in check."
Looking at the photos, I think better shrouds that force the air thru the heat exchangers would help a lot. At 175 mph, there are large pressure differentials between the different points on the bodywork, so there's an opportunity to create significant air flow thru the heat exchangers. One doesn't need huge openings because of the large pressure differentials, but the inlets and outlets have to be in the right places. In addition, the shrouds and ducts have to be sealed in a way that they force all of the air flow thru the heat exchangers.

Congratulations George on a great race. Is there anything you learned this cycle you will put to better speed/handling next time around? I know all of these events are an iterative tuning process.

Strange we don't run this type of event in Australia or I have never heard of it being run.

Love reading the reports on these George. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the positive comments.

Here is the 2nd video from the event. This is from miles 32-52 of 90, which includes the speed trap where I averaged 200 mph for 9.2 miles (or 203 mph for 8.1 miles).
