Those look identical to the S4/GTS arms that officially are not DIY rebuildable [but some outfits manage to rebuild them].

Scott,

It sure does! Rebuilds exchange are around $400 plus all the shipping, import duties etc.

Assuming that is the right hand side [Driver side in a RHD vehicle] if you can read the part number I can confirm that is the case as I have a spare arm waiting to replace the current one in due course.

As I understand your model is configured suspension wise identical to the S4 and later but I am not 100% sure on that. The rebuildable arms covered up to the 86 models and thus excludes yours or so I suspect.

Fred,

Yeh, my car is an 86.5 with S4 gear. Just checked 928MS and, yes they rebuild them. I might try and find a mob here in Aus that do them. If no luck I'll send mine Stateside.

Cheers

Roger has them in stock. Not cheap but they are a work of art.

Well worth the $$ IMO.

Well hold on there for a minute. Is the joint bad? Or is it just the boot? If it's only the boot, then you can put a number of generic boots (look for VW boots) on there.

If the joint is bad, I think Carl from 928 MS sells some type of rebuild kit. Yup... he does. https://928motorsports.com/parts/balljointrepair.php

Only up to 86 for the DIY version.

I presume Scott has checked and found play in the ball joint but...?

^^^^^^Yeah but its only for '78-'86. Not 86.5 or S4 up.

Remember that ROW 86 models all have the later suspension. It's only the North America cars that were carryover hosts for the last of the remaining leftover bits. 'Mericans didn't drive the cars fast so no need for the better brakes I guess.

The Upper A-Arm on the 1978-86 928s are cast aluminum, and designed to allow the upper ball-joint to be serviced. There is a snap-ring holding in the old ball joint, you remove it and install the new ball joint. We have a kit and instructions that allow you to do this with the suspension still IN THE CAR and also replace the all-important ball joint bushing.

Starting with 1986.5, the upper a-arms became forged and are NOT user-serviceable. We do have the ability to have them sent in to be re-manufactured, however.

Remember they are not interchangeable. The 1986.5 and up A-Arms are shorter than the 78-86 models.
