Default Engine Install Idea

I have struggled in the past pulling and dropping engines into my various cars. I always seem to end up under the car with a hydraulic jack to raise the bellhousing and torque tube up. This time I am going to try something different.

Bought some 1/8" vinyl coated wire rope and some clamps. Looped it around the lower bellhousing and lifted it using my engine brace. I assume you could use a 4x4, too.

This works ok for the install, but I think a 3/8" vinyl rope might be better during the engine removal.

Similarly, I put a jack under the torque tube so it can be raised/lowered. I can kick it left-right a bit, too.

With 16V engines, the trick is to get it horizontal as the mount points are symmetrical across the center of gravity. S4 engines are better balanced.

I usually jack the bell housing and TT up max, then place a small piece of wood between the TT and the cross brace at the front. Remove engine, reinstall engine, remove wood, done.

I am trying to avoid that. :-)

I normally install from the bottom up with a screw jack on the TT. Much easier.
But this requires a 2 post hoist and a hydraulic transmission jack capable of supporting the engine.

Done (with Kevin Wilson's assistance)

We fought the PS motor mount and then had to raise the front of the engine to sneak the flywheel into the bell housing. Next time I'm going to use a come along or something like it to raise the front of the engine from up top over the engine hoist to the front lift point.
