I believe it was mentioned earlier in the thread but you should consider the 80-82 exhaust. This is what I put one my 79 when I took the ugly Borla off. The later systems are partially stainless and look the part. They fit with no modifications.

IMHO aftermarket just doesn't look right from behind and the tip exit is always a little off.

Agreed. I'll be looking for a factory system. Keep me in mind when you're coming across this stuff, guys.

^^^ The for fitting a 79> Borla to a 78.

For OE, 78 only uses a rear catalever hanger. So to fit 79> it must be modified to accommodate the rear hanger.

Today I'm out $1.95 for diesel and about $16 for hot soapy water. But it was worth it, even though I came home from the carwash looking like I rolled around in the engine compartment of a locomotive.
The undercarriage isn't spotless, but I made a BIG dent in getting it clean!

Prior to that, I literally washed off my hood insulation with a garden hose. Good call, because you could breathe hard on it and it would disintegrate. Still have to clean up the adhesive with mineral spirits, but I'm making a little progress.

The search begins for a good used stock '80-82 single pipe system (without a cat), hopefully close enough to Chicago that I can pick it up myself.

If that isn't optimistic enough, I'll also be looking for a brown vinyl dash & black pod, without cracks.

Meanwhile, I'll start collecting hen's teeth.

Ok, who speaks German?

So what's the deal with this center cluster? I'm curious to know if the speedometer was swapped out when the car was imported into the U.S., or if it was ordered that way when new. The story I got was that it was purchased new in Germany by a U.S. serviceman, who later brought it back to New Jersey. Would it have been possible to get a MPH speedometer, and the oil gauge would still have been marked in German? Why wouldn't any of the other gauges have been labeled in German? I assume they don't say "volt", "Temp" or "Tank". Regardless, it's pretty cool and a little unique.

I think I know what "OEL - DRUK" means, but there are a lot of lights on the center console that I have no idea what they're saying.

Ok, so I cheated & used Google translate, because my "Bremsbelag" light is always on. Brake pads. Hmm... they don't seem to be squeaking. How worn are the pads when the light starts coming on?
Well, I guess I'll just have to pull the wheel and find out.

Federalization was something of a "hit or miss" process. It depended on the integrity of the shop doing the work and the diligence of the inspector.

It's entirely possible that they only swapped over the speedo. More typical to do the entire cluster, but speedo only isn't unknown.

I would call it "possible but unlikely" that it came that way from the factory. Partly because the Germans are pretty strict about cars and I doubt that they would allow a car with a MPH speedo to be sold new and registered there (could be wrong on that).

I'm hitting the open road later today, for a 4-5 hour, 250 mile "shake down" trip in the '78. Tool kit loaded, along with a flashlight, handful of fuses, spare oil & a small fire extinguisher. All fluid levels checked, belts look good, tires checked, brakes are fine (despite a persistent warning light), and other than an idle that (IMHO) is a little high, it's been running very well during my 'around town' driving over the last few weeks. Exhaust is still a little too loud for my taste, but that's another issue.

This will be my first trip of any consequence, and a good way to get a much better feel for what I'm starting with. Just to be safe, I'm being followed by another car, which is actually more out of need than an over abundance of caution (we're picking up another car that I've been restoring and bringing it home for a few weeks. Garage space is always the limiting factor!)

So the next post you'll see in here will be a positive one, or a photo of a disaster. Wish me well!
