Contemplating 82 928 Purchase
I've owned serval water cooled Porsches in the past, but never a 928.
There is a 1982 928 locally for sale and I'm contemplating the purchase. I'd like a little guidance on the decision. Mileage is 130k. Recent dealership maintenance, including complete timing belt service, was performed 3 months ago at the cost of $9k. Runs great and pulls strong. Automatic tranny shifts fine under light acceleration but the 2/3 shift is hard under hard acceleration. Suspension has been lowered and ride is harsh but true. Exterior paint is original and worn. Trim pieces faded. All are straight. Interior dash and door panels are worn and warped. Carpet ok. Seats in great shape. Electronics are in working order.
Asking price is $3k. I'm able to perform most maintenance and repair. I have concerns regarding transmission shift. May be as simple as vacuum and or modulator adjustment, but you never know. I'd purchase it for a weekend car, not a daily driver.
I'd value your input on purchase and any other comments. Thank you.

Sounds like could be a good get. Also sounds like you know cars, hence maintenance and repairs would not be a problem. With a 722 MB auto transmission that we have shifting can be addressed via the control pressure control cable (timing) and pressure modulator (strength). I would get the car up and get a sample of the ATF and inspect it. Look for metal and if burnt and old, for neglect. Since it an auto, need to evaluate for thrust bearing deterioration by checking crankshaft end play. This is a peculiar malady in the 928 auto which is easily recognized and mitigated against. See the New Visitor thread up top for more info on this.
Best Wishes.

I would say go for it. Harsh auto shifting may just be needing a fluid change. Does it have LSD? Did the recent $9k service include fluids change, proof with receipt? $3k is a great price for a driving 928 with WP/TB changed and you don't need to bother for a while, since it is noninterference.
Do check crank endplay and thrust bearing, but if I remember, really the post-'84 auto are more susceptible to it. Prefer '84 auto still have the more robust connection in the front.
Unless it is a rust bucket with a rotted out interior, $3k is very reasonable if you like the color now a days. Start $2500 and see if he will bite!
good luck

Oh, I have followed that car's purchase price for the past month. Is it the rauchquartzmetallic brown in Bend? It was for sale >$10k just 2 weeks ago. He had it drastically reduced either he discovered something bad, title is not clean, or he may just needed the money for tax season.
From pics, car is pretty nice in a rare color. If title is clean, go for it! Or I will call my inlaws from Portland to pick it up!

$10K for a 130K mile '82 is crazy talk. Maybe someone just talked some sense into him? On the other hand, $3K sounds like a good deal if there is nothing terrible lurking in there.

Thanks for the input. I didn't pull the trigger on this 928. Too many unknowns, tranny issues, suspension overhaul, interior components, exterior paint and trim, and just didn't have that gut love feel.
It is the 928 listed in Bend, OR and has been reduced over last 2 weeks. Owner did not provide reasoning on price reduction, only that he needs to scale back on the number of vehicles. Cheers.

Sold <1 hr ago! The timing is suspicious for a Rennlister to have had bought it. The guy has legit Porsche Dealer invoice of front suspension, WP/TB done to the tune of >$10k ($9800 with $600 discount). Seller stated that he loses interests in cars fast and just wanted to get rid of it.
Very good buy!

Guess I'm a little late to the party, not that it would help a lot... There's a tiny but hopefully growing conclave of 928's here in Bend. Hopefully the buyer will pop up here and make his/her presence known. If he/she is a PCA member here we'll have a chance to visit.
My first dose of spring 928 fever was today, when I had a chance to visit a nearby car to look at a couple odd leaks during winter storage. I'm home for a few days. Still lots of cinders on the roadsides here, and some telltale ribbons of deicer on the highway pavement. Another few weeks of streetsweeper activity and a good rainstorm to wash the mag chloride off will signal the beginning of driving season. Meanwhile, yesterday's news included a violent crash in blizzard whiteout conditions just a dozen miles west of here near the ski area. Spring here so far has been Fake News I guess. It's still about time to pop the car off the storage supports and roll it onto the lift for a few things. The front yard glacier has melted, snowblower is summer-ized, yard-edge marker poles are put away.
