Default Supercharged 81' engine failure

Hello Gang,

Life has gotten quite busy and I haven't had the pleasure of using THE best resource for 928 DIY's, community and a treasure of info! I call on you now because my daily 81' had quite an engine failure on the way into work two days ago. It's a U.S. 81' supercharged 5 -speed and I think the oil pump has either failed or the nut came off dropping the gear which in turn flopped the whole timing belt... It backfired a couple times and everything lit up on the dash as it rolled to a stop.

You can see in the second image the oil pump gear has removed itself and rubbed a hole in the plastic cover. There is also a random nut laying underneath.

I can't remember if the old 16v is an interference motor but a quick search says it's not?
What are my options if in fact the motor is toast? Could it be possible there isn't much damage I can just throw a new oil pump + gear and timing belt on?

I rebuilt this motor from the ground up once before and the thought of going through that again and the $$$$$ makes me cringe.

Cover off will reveal more of course but the 16v is not an interference engine so you should be good on that front.

May be as simple as a timing belt job with an oil pump.

Ouch. Looks like the oil pump gear came off. Don't know if the engine is interference. At the very least you need to do a thorough check of the cam snouts, gears, waterpump pulley and tensioner. Lots of forces at play when the belt goes.

Unless you have excessive carbon build up on the pistons, the valves will be fine. Fix the timing belt issue and you should be good to go. This should be a cheap fix.

If you are using a square tooth timing belt, I have a new oil pump gear #928.107.107.04 It got shipped to me when I did the TB/WP in my '83, but Mine uses the round tooth belt.. If you need it, PM me and we'll do a deal.

Slide the gear back on, set the belt timing, and do a quick leakdown test to find if there's cylinder damage. If the engine is the original US 4.7, you'll likely be fine. Carefully inspect the nose of the driver's side camshaft, as things passing through the gears usually pull hard on that cam nose.

Then drain the oil and pass it through a white towel on the way, looking for metal remnants and powder that might indicate bearing wear from spinning without oil. Damage is unlikely but it's a cheap look. Then bolt everything back up and drive it.
