Default Present from a PO

After installing a new FOE harness from Sean on the motor waiting to go back in the car I took a few minutes to cut apart the old harness and salvage the orange sleeving and a couple of connectors in usable shape. As I'm clipping along I come to an area of the harness leading to the alternator and find these beauties hiding under some electrical tape. Note to self: ALWAYS REMOVE UNKNOWN ELECTRICAL TAPE!!!!! The Exciter wire wasn't even taped, just soldered together.

At least it was soldered.

Now if they would have just used a hydraulic crimper on the two butt splices and some decent wire/insulation for the repair. Oh well, all new now thanks to Sean.

Damage was, I would bet, caused by pulling the motor and not disconnecting the harness clamp on the engine carrier. Or, IOWs, I've seen and repaired this PO damage before.

I hadn't thought about that as a failure mode Dave but it makes sense. The only other thing I could come up with was the wires being mis-routed at some point and spending quality time against the exhaust manifold. I "hope" I finally found the reason for the big voltage drop I was seeing when the engine compartment was fully warmed. It also explains why I had so much wire length to deal with at the alternator and never could quite seem to find the right routing for all that mess.
