Default Door Handle Question

So before I get take everything apart, I want to make sure I know what I am facing.

My driver's side door handle was sticky, and difficult to operate. today I noticed that the front arm is now dangling, so something obviously broke. I think this means my exterior door handle broke.

Since I will have to go in there, I will replace the inner mechanism as well, but will I have to replace my outer handle as well. Can the inner mechanism fail and cause the outer door handle to fall off the door.

I can post a picture if that will help.

thanks in advance. --

The 'inner' mechanism is more than likely fine and no need to change. The handle is a weak point and tends to break (as you have experienced) It is fiddily as you need to remove the anti theft covers (a pain) then the handle (a pain) then reassemble (guess what... yep a pain also ) Your experience may differ, but probably not. Just take your time.

thanks everyone. Contacted roger, and think I am going to leave off the security plate. I have some other work to do in the door as well like replace the rubber scrapper. so this now gives me an excuse..

I'd say it is most likely to be the hinge that is broken.

I would put the plate back on. Other than security, it keeps rain/moisture from dripping on the door lock mechanism. As an example, replacing the rubber window scraper requires a lot of soapy water to slide it on.

Putting it back on is easy but the window must be all the way down. I would also recommend trying to cover the window (while it's down inside the door) with a towel or something. The security plate has some sharp edges and is very easy to scrape the glass as you're rotating it around.
