Default Oil pressure regulator 'piston with sealing strap'

Hello All,

I have removed the oil pressure regulator and bypass caps, springs, and plungers from the engine in the Red Witch. I have new springs and crush rings to go on.

Last night at work, I cleaned all the parts in the heated parts washer. After cleaning, I saw a little discoloration on the pressure regulator plunger. Out of curiousity, I looked up this plunger on AutoAtlanta's website. I was wondering how much a new one cost.

Well...according to the AutoAtlanta version of PET, it is called 'piston with sealing strap.'
Say what? I saw no sealing anything on the plunger I pulled out. To my knowledge, the last time this piston was out was just before it was installed in this engine. As well, I saw nothing down the plunger bore in the block.

Anyone know what this means? Am I missing a sealing 'something' for the oil pressure regulator plunger?

On this screenshot, it is item #48, circled in red.
Photos of my parts are in my camera. I will try to download and post them tonight.

I've seen a few engines with oil pressure relief valves that have a sealing ring around them. Now exactly sure what vintage these came from...I never thought it important enough to record the information.

All the replacements I've ever obtained do not have this feature.

Move forward.

Very good. Thank you, Greg!

Moving forward and reinstalling the oil pressure regulator and bypass valves.

Just for posterity, here are the photos of the oil pressure regulator and oil bypass valves.

Oil pressure regulator on left, bypass on right. These are how they came out of the engine.

Parts cleaned, though the orientation is swapped. Bypass is on the left, oil pressure regulator is on the right. The plunger in question is circled in red.

What fluid/additives are run through the parts washer? Looks like residue or oxidation from the pics. Polish to get it off?

Hi Dave928S!

Parts washer uses an aqueous based solvent. I don't know the specs offhand. Past experience has shown it will eat plating and discolor aluminum.
As such, I limit part exposure to the solution to only a few monents. IE, a short soak and long enough to scrub. Followed by a rinse in a bucket of hot water, then a final spray down with contact cleaner.

Discoloration on the regulator piston was lessened after cleaning. It cannot be felt with a finger.

To be blunt, not sure what to polish it with.

Oil bores with engine assembly oil. Insert. Use new sealing washers. Torque. Forget.

That's kinda what I was thinking.

Will do that in the morning after work.
Clean, and lubricated. ALWAYS use new sealing rings.

Thanks!

Note, all further work done to the engine and accessories on the Red Witch will be documented in this thread:
