Guy, interesting input. so did you have the support bracket installed with the new setup? We found that the cam belt covers would not accommodate the fan mounts with the addition of the bracket. We tried all types of Kempf adjustments, and none really made an appreciable difference.
I used the 83 pivot arm, bolt and bushings. These years didn't use the S4 support bracket but does utilize the larger diameter shaft on the pivot bolt and unlike the early bolt is not NLA.
As mentioned, I had other issues including a bent pivot bolt which was almost imperceivable with the naked eye. My best "guess" was that my belt noise was coming from the new roller and the sound radiated up the pivot arm and that this sound was caused by uneven tension on the roller (caused by the bent pivot bolt).
Good luck with the detective work, you will lick this for sure!

You do not need to spend a lot of money for a belt just call Roger and have him send you a gates belt or something and for gods sake ask questions before you spend your money. as a for instance the water pump get a good one like the Guardian should last the life of the car or close. Best of luck to you.

Note to Mark Woudsma and Jim Corenman, while we tried brand new belts, both were Conti. In all honesty, I was talking to Ursula at Sharktoberfest and she was the one who first mentioned a Porsche belt because of Mark's experience. Shame on me for not listening.
After weeks of waiting for a Porsche belt from Germany for a ridiculous amount of money, installed it this afternoon with the Mark Anderson (with some prerequisite wine! )
Belt noise is gone! Vanished! Now, please understand that I tried soaping the belt to rule it out, and was even reluctant to try another Conti belt because I was SURE it wasn't the cause. It sounded like it was completely localized to the tensioner bolt area.
But life is humbling. and I am still in shock the Porsche belt made the very distinct whine disappear.
Thanks for all the input and offers of help, grateful to this community as always!

Remember you promised yourself no more involvement in timing belt/tensioner/water pump threads. No comments, no input....nothing.
Keep whatever you know/have learned to yourself.
Just smile and move on.
Nothing to say, here.

I have a square tooth belt I bought over 12 years ago. I wonder what kind it is.

Im now running the Dayco that Roger mentions. Its thicker and has more "fabric" on the teeth and runs much quieter than the Conti. When I got my car it had a conti on it, and it had terrible belt whine that would only be reduced by loosening it- but it was too loose to be safe.
