Default EGR issue??

Tracking down vacuum leaks and replacing hoses on 83S Euro and found broken pipe from the EGR to the intake.
All connections are frozen so for now I crimped the pipe shut.
This eliminated my high idle issue.
I don't know how long this has been broken prior to my purchase last month. It doesn't seem to have done any long term damage.
Any down side of driving it this way in the short term?
Obviously better than a massive vacuum leak.

Worse cold engine emissions, that's about it. The vacuum leak could actually do damage, disabling the EGR system wont harm anything.
