Jeff, to my very uneducated knowledge, there were three main color dampers:

Orange, up to early S4 years
Black, GT's
Green, GTS's

That's what I know, though it doesn't necessarily seem right.

I suspect the harmonics of the crank was similar enough from the original 4.5 on up through the early 5.0 S4.
The 5.0 GT crank was different.
The 5.4 GTS crank was different still.

To my again limited knowledge, the ATI Superdamper is the only balancer Greg Brown uses on any of his stroker motors.

I am going to assume someone far more knowledgeable will chime in and set me straight.

Note: A stroll through PET and the Technical Spec books for all the years should shed light on balancer part numbers, applications, and crankshaft strokes.

To confuse matters:

M28/21 and M28/22 engines (84-86 Euro 16V) have a green damper. At least mine does, as do the others I have seen.

Sounds familiar.

I mentioned ATI part no. 917020 here before. That is a Chevy SB damper, about $ 283.00 at Jegs. The hub is fairly easy to fabricate or you can probably get it from ATI. https://rennlist.com/forums/928-foru...-damper-3.html (post 33).

I do believe Carl at one time said he had exclusive rights with ATI for their hubs for the 928.

No worries - just wanted to add that data point in case someone stumbled upon this in the future. From what I have seen from your posts, you are far more educated than me

Another question if we order a factory damper from Porsche how can we know it will work properly? The damper can have been stored on a shelf for quite a number of years. How fresh will the rubber be?
Åke
Same damper on both.

None of the stock 928 crankshafts are externally balanced, nor are any of my crankshafts, so the dampers are all neutrally balanced.

I once read that, too. I was placing an order for 10 units and asked if this was true. ATI laughed at this thought. They told me that I'd bought 10X the number he had, at that point in time.....and they were not about to give someone an exclusive when only selling a few dampers.

No, of course not. I was the first to develop a hub for the 928 crank they told me, but they will make a hub for just about anything if you ask. Our damper may differ from Greg's as we have the elastomer bands changed to match our stroke and HP levels. That's what you are really trying to buy: a harmonic dampener to match the expected resonance of your crank, based on the build.

Just came from Damper Doctor's website. Very interesting, let me know what you think of it when you get yours back. It will still be a mass damper, but hopefully with the newer silicone-rubber, you will feel better about it.

Understood, Carl.
However, at this point, I'm not sure I am going to have my original balancer rebuilt.
I am thinking long and hard about the ATI Superdamper.

Hi Greg - I hope you still have me on the list for one. Thanks!
