928 Factory Wheels

I'm thinking about putting wider tires on the rear of my 1986 928S Euro. When looking at used factory wheels I see 16x7 and 16x8 sizes. Does anyone know if Porsche made a factory 16x9 size wheel?

There is a Design 90 9 inch wheel part number 928.362.118.02 that has ET52 and 16 inch diameter according to a data list I have.

There is also a forged 9 inch wheel 928.362.119.30 that has ET60.

I have no knowledge of these being supplied as a stock fitment- maybe a special order? I am under the impression that the CS and SE models had forged 8 inch rear wheels but maybe I have that wrong.

There are some other rims that do not have a 928 coding.

Rgds

Not in the "manhole cover" slotted wheels, at least that I'm aware of. The usual problem with the 928 is too small in front, while the suspension and steering geometry drastically limit your front-wheel options to those with 65-67 mm offsets, Some folks run less (down to 55mm) but sacrifice some steering stability that makes the car so stable at speed. Less than about 57mm, and you are through the 'dead zone' with on-center bump-steering effect, and starting to get into 'counter-active' region where bumps get a steering response that exacerbates the impact on the steering chassis through the chassis.

As far as I know there's no OE wheel wider than 8" that will fit on the front of a 928 reasonably well.

And, that 8" front will be a forged Club $port wheel.

If you can stand a little 'sticking out' then there are some 8.5" wheels that are out there.

If you want wider than 8" and want a reasonably good fit, you have to go (semi-)custom.

He's looking for factory 9 inchers for the rear.

1989 928 Club Sport wheels. 8" front, 9" rear. Very hard to find. Porsche 996 Turbo Twist II wheels, 8" front and 10" rear look great and fit well. I had these on my 85 euro and never felt any difference with front offset. Don't go aftermarket, never look right.

LOL. I missed one word. But it was an important one. :banghead:

D90s are 16x9 rears. OE '91 GT (and '90 IIRC.)

The Cup 17"s from early GTSs are x9 in the rear.

I may have one 16x9 that is a bit worse for wear that I'd part with for very short money.

Finding 16" tires in OE sizes is not easy.

Plenty of non-928 Porsche options that work in the rear at 9" or more but most will be >16".

Thanks for the responses. I'm looking for this factory wheel as a 16x9 for the rear of my car.

Porsche never made a 9 inch wide wheel in that style ('dish', or 'manhole cover').

And Porsche never chromed the 6, 7, or 8 inch ones....read the numbers on the back it will give you the size. Contact 928 International for a good used wheel they may have some with aftermarket chrome....

I have a polished set and a machined set that look great. The wheel shop that did my polished set is no longer in business. That shop owner claimed he had a 928 S that had these wheels in a 9 inch width.

Thanks for the feedback!

Wheels can be widened, local 928 owner has those wheels he widened to 10". I have a set of phone dials 8.5" wide in the rear (made by the same person who made the 10" flat disc).

Another issue is tires size. Stock rear's are 245/45-16 Wider tires to keep similar overall radius:
255/40-16
255/45-16
265/40-16
265/45-16
275/40-16

Per Tire Rack and Discount Tire, none of these sizes are currently in production.

Next option is to bump up to 255/50-16 (like I did) and there is only one street tire made this size. My wide phone dials sat on the shelf for a good 15+ years since there were no tire options to use them.
