Default VW Golf/928

Has anybody heard of this before?

In '79 a German VW dealer purchased 10 928s and fitted a custom VW Golf body to the Porsche drivetrain, widened by nearly 9 inches.

There's some discussion (in Project 928 IIRC) of the factory using a few different sleeper test platform cars during 928 driveline development. The Rabbit/Golf was one listed.

Ah, I did a search before posting and didn't find anything. Nonetheless it may be informative for the newer folk.

They used some Audi 100 Coupes. They were the only ones that hadn't been painted with shrinking paint - which made it possible to fit the drive train for the 928 into them.

Believe it or not, I remember reading an article with that car back in the early 1980's. It fascinated me as a kid. I loved the idea of a sleeper hatchback. It planted the seed for my first car, a 1986 GTI. I wish they had made more of these - would be fun to find an Artz Golf 928!

There was one at the international 928 meeting in Leipzig I think it was 2014. I even might have a picture somewhere

I actually kind of like the green "shooting brake" or wagon from the pic "paalw" posted above. I'd drive the heck out of it. I owned a '78 Rabbit. One of the worst cars I've ever owned. Definitely wouldn't want a 928 disguised as one. LOL. Definitely a cool sleeper though.
