We discovered water that had been sitting in #5 and the coating was destroyed. The only fix is to bore it and replace with 968 pistons or find another stock block. However we are into this .... and you know what that means....new rods, GB designed crank etc. Since we are into this in such a big way...why not? With luck we could get some serious hp as the engine would then be 6.4 liter. This would really make it a special car while keeping as original as possible.

6.4 liter, should be fun.

Sad news but hoping to read of an even better recovery- you surely deserve such after your trials and tribulations.

For purposes of personal education, what coating are we referring to here? I am under the impression the cylinders are solid alloy with the silicon particles in solution that form the bearing surface when prepared correctly. Has the base alloy been corroded by water that was sat there [presumably from the fire fighting efforts]?

Fred,
You are correct. We let the water sit in the block ( water from the fire dept) long enough to corrode the cylinder wall enough that the only way to remove it is to bore the hole. The reason we let it sit so long as we were dealing with insurance and the question comes up, do we start the rebuild or do we wait?

S3 block= thicker cylinder towers = room for more corrosion = bigger bore = 106 x 95.25 x 8 = 6724 cc = Van in 1st place.

Let it sit a while longer.

As if we did not have enough to worry about with these things! Maybe Perry Mason can get you some more compo becuase of the dithering around by the insurance company!

No one can accuse you of being a "Fair Weather" sailor! Like Rob says one can always find a "silver lining" if one tries hard enough. When I crashed my motorcycle and got all banged up whilst at University first thing I said to my Dad when he saw me in the accident room was " I am going to get another bike just as soon as I have the insurance money". I was less brave with my nearest and dearest 13 years ago when I was banged up with a fractured L1 vertebra after losing my late S4 due to some plonker on a mobile phone clipping me [Pit style] in a tight bend as I was passing him but she came round after a day or two.

Nothing that GB cannot make better than original. More photo's as you progress- please!

Fred
