Default Header Gasket

Ready to install header on block. I have the headers and the new aluminum gaskets.

But, I am looking at the block, and it _appears_ like the old aluminum gaskets are squashed down into the groove around the exhaust port and I need to pick them out. But before I start picking around, can somebody confirm that what I am seeing is really the old aluminum ring gasket squished down into a groove and it needs to be picked out?

Engine arrive w/o headers and I have never removed or installed before.

Yep they need to be removed just like that and then clean the grove.

I'm wondering if anyone has any tricks to hold them in-place when reinstalling them when the engine is in the car, as they tend to fall out?

use some of the sticky grease that you use on the clutch splines to hold the gaskets in place,
not much is needed

That should do it and burn off quickly I'm thinking.
Thank you Stan

get a fresh sheet metal screw and screw it into the center of the gasket ,
this will lift it out

Before I read your reply, I tapped a small flat screwdriver into the "gap" of the ring. Lifted right out. Easy Peasy. Was just being paranoid about hosing up the block, but clearly was actually no big deal.

Just to close out this thread, I did find the following picture in the WSM Technical documents for '85, page 13 that was helpful.
