While each Spare Tire Cover cools in the forming jig I get to spend a little time milling Pawls. I now have about 150 or so of them milled in the back of the top notch and will likely be finishing the last of them today or tomorrow.

I'm going to re-grease one of the caps I have apart and try the pawl for ratcheting and then compare my pawl with an original in terms of ratcheting stiffness to see if I am going to need to drill the spring hole a bit deeper. Maybe not. I actually already have the holes almost a millimeter deeper than the originals, probably largely at Alan's suggestion, so I hope that is enough.

I have all but about 30 or 40 of the batch of Pawls completed except for the possible need to drill the spring hole a bit deeper. I think I'll get to that later this morning with one or two of them and then see how they ratchet. I have compared the ratcheting of mine as now finished with an original plastic one and mine are still somewhat stiffer.

I am close to finished with these and have decided on the answer to the question that has been asked a couple of times, but not answered; and that is how much? I am going to start a different thread in my small business membership to make these available for distribution to owners, and the basic cost is going to be $30 each. I will pay all or some of the postage which I will explain in the new thread.

I finished the milling of all the pawls and drilled the spring hole in one of them so that about .170 to .180 of the spring is exposed, rather than the .230 with the originals, and it feels like it ratchets just about right. It feels like the cap will tighten snug before it ratchets. I think I'll set up and drill the rest of them so right at .190 of spring is exposed and call it good. I think that will make them ratchet just about equal to the feel of the originals.

The spare tire cover fits all the 928s Gator. Thanks.

I finished redrilling the spring holes and now have only to hand finish these pawls. I have opened a new thread in my small business membership to make these available to the 928 owners.

I already have Randy's caps to work over since he is the first one on the list of those who have expressed an interest. I'll probably get at least one of the Separating Tools finished enough to take his apart and refurbish by this weekend.

If you are on the list (or not) let me know your interests. I have enough hand finished now to meet that initial need or desire.

I didn't post it before when I finally figured out the teeth geometry, but The last thing I said got changed. I finally decided that the face of the teeth in the cap where these Pawls mesh for opening is actually radial to the center. The other side of the teeth where they ratchet is angled significantly, but I haven't actually measured the difference.

What I did is more carefully lay out the geometry of the teeth and the layout of the teeth in the cap, which is about .950 in in diameter, and use that with the 20 degree per tooth calculation, and some adjustment in the pawl teeth angles to work with the teeth in the cap and came up with a formula that works with a 30 degree taper mill bit for the space between the teeth, and it turns out that there are three angles rather than just one that works using a straight mill bit for the front and back and the 30 degree bit for in between the teeth. The angles I finally came up with are 15, 20 and 25 degrees.

The 15 degree angle gives a 5 degree difference between the opening surfaces of the back tooth, the 20 degree, with a 30 degree taper bit gives the same for the other tooth, and the 25 degree angle at the other side gives a better and close, matching, and mating to the ratcheting side of the teeth.

On another note, contrary to Randy's interests, I have put off for a bit the finishing of the separating tool. Since I have the mill set up for the Pawls and the formula refined, and since I have the material and tooling needed, and since I am in the mood and mode to do these I decided to finish another batch of about 250 of these before I let it go. Those are nearly finished and I hope to get back to the Tools and Randy's caps in the next few days.
