Twin distributers

Twin distributers
Twin distributers. What's the real story? I've heard it was a question of not enough space in the engine compartment in the '84 and '85 Euros. I'm not buying it. I have an '83 Euro with a single distributer. It's a screamer and the single distributer with eight contacts works just fine. Inquiring minds want to know.

It was to allow the more advanced EZK system to work on the 16V engine without a significant redesign.
They would have had to engineer multiple new parts to get two 944 distributors to mount onto the front of each camshaft.
Porsche didn't want to invest the money at the time on an aging engine platform when new 32V heads were a year away.
Making 1 new part that utilizes existing parts costs a lot less money than making a few new ones. Especially when Porsche at the time was a little low on funds to say the least.

My understanding (and I could certainly be wrong on this) is that there was an issue with the single coil being able to provide good spark at higher RPMs. So they went to a dual coil/twin distributor setup.
As was noted, the 32v put the distributors on the front of the heads, but this wasn't a viable option for the 16v motors.

I prefer to think of it as four V-Twin engines, but that works too.
