Climate control **** (sliders) how to install?
Need some help. My upper temperature slider on my 1985 is loose. Want to replace but unsure how to replace after seeing a black wire attached to rear of button?
My bottom slide button doesn't have wire attached?
How does metal clip attach to new slide button?

to do this properly,
remove the center vent,
Then slide the H trim up about 1/4 inch then pull it free,
with a magnet and screwdriver,
remove the 6 screws that hold the HVAC head and A/C button panels in the console.
NOTE the magnet is used so you dont drop the screws with washers.
Once the screws are removed then slide both parts out of the console.
NOTE the wires may be caught on the radio,
so you may have to remove the right side console panel as well.
Once this is done then remove the wire connectors from the HVAC unit,
then remove the screws, from top and bottom panels, gently separate the halves.
Once the panels are off you will see a black wire this is the flexible light feed for each slider.
The sliders are retained by metal friction clips you will get a new clip and button,
as the original clips will not fit the new buttons.
The black light feed wires slide into the centers of each button.
It is also wise to clean the slider grid and lubricate with some deoxit 100.
Inspect the board relay as this it the part that burns out,
so you should also consider replacing the relay,
do a search for HVAC relay replacement.
put things back together the same way you took them apart

Someone posted on another thread you just have to push them in hard and they snap into place. That didn't work for me.

Might be more involved than I thought. When my car was last in shop I had them replace bottom button and tech said he just used a pick to get clip over plastic sides of button?

On a side note, are the HVAC units like this type the same for both auto and 5-spd cars? I have seen used ones advertised as coming out of an auto or manual car and wondered if there was a difference.

They could be referring to the HVAC system itself (auto or manual). My car ('83 s model) has Climate Control, so it has no manual AC button. Everything is controlled by the round **** and sliders.
Perhaps they meant a "manual" car is one that has the separate AC button?

hold a light to the rear of the slider **** and see if the front is illuminated the flexible light wire should slide into the **** all the way a dab of silicone then let it cure should hold it.
NOTE you may have to reroute the flexible lines inside the HVAC unit,
as they can sometimes shear off in the old sliders., thus the line is shorter.
I have never had any luck just pushing in a new **** from the front without dismantling the unit the spring clip needs to be changed to accept the new ****
