Weissach Luggage
 

I well remember the words of my good friend Mr. Jim Bailey saying that the Weissach edition would never increase in value over that of a similar 82 car without the option 8>).

One of my better investments was to "hoard" sets of Weissach luggage over the last few years. I sold a set recently for a LOT more than I paid for it and have pending sales for additional sets. The hoarder in me does not really want to let them go but my new to me GTS needs a paint job.

A lot of 928 peeps have probably never seen a set of Weissach luggage so I thought I would share a couple of pictures that probably will never be repeated again. The pictures are of 6 sets of luggage. I wish I had done this when I had 7 sets.

A set of luggage consists of two suitcases and one clothes hanger and they are made in the matching two tone leather used in the car.

The Weissach option had a nearly $6000 price tag that back in 82 would have bought you a small family car.

The highest asking price was $10k but I do not have confirmation it actually sold for that price.

I hoard anything 928 I can get my hands on even the cars themselves.

It has always been "fact" that no 16V or even 85/86 would be worth more than any 87+ car.... of any pedigree.

It wasn't all that long ago, showing up at Cars N Coffee or PCA gathering in a 78-82 car simply meant you could not afford an S.
Owing an S meant you could not afford an S3
Driving an S3 meant you could not afford an S4.....

An automatic S4 selling for over $20k? No way.....the bidders must have been drunk.

Funny how times change.

The ironic thing about this is, had Porsche offered more expensive options like this (as they do today) maybe they would have been profitable in the late 80's.

Have you priced out a new Porsche or Harley-Davidson? These are two companies who have perfected the profitability of options and "rare" special editions.

Just for kicks I priced out a fully loaded Porsche Mecan (you know, the rebadged VW Tiguan). The total? Over $160,000.....base price is $54,400 for the Porsche which is based on a VW with a base price of $24,995.

Suddenly $30,000 for a nice 928 doesn't seem all that absurd.

The funny part is that if you park a base model next to a fully optioned out one, unless you are an expert, you will not notice the staggering cost difference in all those options. The two will look the same to the average person.

Hell, the average person cannot tell the difference between a fully loaded Porsche and the VW version.

That was always the big speculation why the C4 ZR-1 was such a flop. You were paying double for a car that looked 99% the same as the base model.

In today's world, such a car sells like hotcakes as people eat up the ability to rattle off options at a dinner party.

I'm looking forward to buying a nice optioned Mican for $10,000.

Completely agree. Same could be said for the BMW M cars vs their brethren. Or all variants 911s. I know my wife thinks they all look the same. :)
