Pump gas/octane query for 32V engine
I always use 92 or 93 octane gas, but the exhaust smells rich, car runs fine.
recently I put 5 gal of 89 octane in it, soon the rich fuel smell was gone, and the shark seemed to run better off the line, now back to 92 octane, the exhaust smells rich again.
the only mod is a RMB, '85 auto
Timing is set at 0' (pass side) and 2' (driver side) at the cams.

The smell and slight performance issue is a result of the extra additives that is in the higher octane fuel. Some of these additives change depending on summer/winter blends.
Some of those higher octane "cleaning" additives actually degrade performance slightly especially on hard acceleration. They raise the octane rating to compensate for this. Racing fuels without the additives represent the "true octane rating" rather than the b.s. rating used by oil companies.
"89" octane performs better on hard acceleration because the gas is not as diluted.
