Default Reattaching the battery box cover

The PO of our Blue 87 S4 detached the battery box cover and the spare tire mounting stud (likely for his subwoofer he deleted before the sale)

Anyhow, I would like to reattach the cover. Anybody have some suggestions for how to remove the remnants from the hinges?

Kevin,

Sounds as though you need a Dremel to get rid of the old bits- not sure how you would re-attach a new hinge- probably one of those brss things you get at your local hardware store and some pop rivets.

At least you do not have the problem I had many years ago when the cover welded itself to the positive post of the battery because ******** here forgot to fasten down the battery!

Regards

Fred

Kevin,
The hinges are fit together and a pin is slid in. If the remnants of the pin are still there you will have to use a very thin punch and hammer them out.

The pins are rusted. Punch was ineffective.

Maybe soaking them in PB Blaster and then retry the punch and or drilling them out?

I am listening carefully because my door came off, now I have to figure out how to re-attach it.

if possible soak the parts in PB blaster it will dissolve the corrosion,
but it may take a few hours.
I put a rusted bolt in a cap from a spray can and added some PB,
then let it soak,
a few hours later the rusty bolt looked new,
and the rust was gone,
the PB had turned a milky orange

Soak with PB. Heat the hinge with a torch, if necessary. A chisel and a hammer should easily get it with enough of those therapies.

Me, I'd drill the three spot welds out on the lid and trunk portion of the hinge, get a hold of Mark at 928 International and have him send me a better used set, drill out the three spot welds on the new set...if not already done for removal at 928 int...then clamp the hinge to the lid (aligning holes) and weld each hole closed, then repeat welding technique on trunk portion of hinge. After it cools off, hit it with some paint.

*REMOVE BATTERY FROM CAR FIRST. WELDING SO CLOSE TO THE BATTERY CAN BE DANGEROUS.

If you don't have access to a welder, pop rivets would do the trick.

Sounds like a whole lot of work to me.... There isn't that much wrong with that lid or hinges IMO, I don't think you need to disassemble or weld those at all - just get the pins out and life is easy.

Chemical assistance will do most of it - bit of mechanical help after that, and I'll bet you can get spring fit pins to replace those hinge pins.

However I do think you need the spare bolted down and for the spare mount you will certainly need to weld it in.

Alan
