Default Gas Tank Boogie, Part 2: "What's in there anyway?"

OK, Found a fuel tank (thanks to GlenL and all the rest who offerd) that I'll probably get this weekend. Pulled the fuel level sender unit off the old leaking tank with the crack right where it always seems to crack, along hte strap groove.

While pulling out the sender unit, I notcied flopping sround inside the tank is a plastic disc with a hole in it that looks like it would fit over the end of the sender unit.

What is this and what does it do, and how should it be psotioned when the sender unit is put in? Yeah, I know, it's just a gas tank right? - Ruf

Rufus, when I pulled and cleaned my tank that part that you are speaking of was not loose in my tank. I think that it acts as a baffle to prevent sloshing when the tank is near empty. I think that I'm talking about the same part. Is it white/or used to be white at the bottom of the tank?

Chucker, Yes it is white and looks like it is the cap in a "resivoir" that seems to collect sloshing gas and hold it near the outlet screen. Since this it he leaking tank, I hope the replacment tank is correct concerning this thing. - Ruf

correct something of a baffle to hold fuel near the bottom of the sending unit ...probably to keep from getting low fuel warning lights when cornering hard . It was placed inside before the tank was molded but has broken loose , it is not essential to have it . If it is loose in your replacement tank it is probably best to remove it , you will need to use side cutters to make small enough pieces to pull it out through the sending unit hole on top of the tank .
