Default "CHECK COOLANT LEVEL" question

Hi All

So if I get the "Check Coolant Level" indicator but the coolant level is fine (and operating temperature), can the problem be anything other than a faulty Coolant Level Sensor?

Thanks in advance!

John

Highly likely the sensor has failed.

1. Unplug it and unscrew it from the tank.
2. Connect a multimeter to the connectors, with the meter set on ohms.
3. Slide the float up and down the shaft and you should see it switch near the bottom of the range of travel (there is a magnetic reed switch in the shaft). If it doesn't switch then the reed switch has failed and you need a new sensor.
4. Also check that the float actually does float by lowering the sensor into a sink of water. If the float does a submarine, then you need a new sensor.
5. If the sensor checks out OK in all respects, then you'll need to check wiring continuity.

Isn't there a pressure sensor forward of the coolant reservoir as well? Seem to remember that can trigger (or maybe inhibit) the coolant warning depending on pressure.

Cheers!

I live in Orlando and sometimes when the morning temperature is a bit chilly, I get a check coolant level warning. I usually turn the ignition on and off (not start engine) a few times and that solves the problem. maybe I have a faulty sensor but, until it becomes permanent I don't plan to change it. I also get a faulty fuel gauge reading that also fixes itself. I think the temperature somehow affects the electronics.
