Default Gear box out

Hi Folks

I have a 1979 5-spd that currently has the gearbox out (Gone to the UK for a rebuild with Paul Anderson).

I am contemplating doing the bearings on the torque tube while I am there as well as dropping the fuel tank and sorting some fuel hoses + tank cradle as I'm not in any rush during the winter to get the car back on the road.

Two questions I have -

1. From reading it's just the auto's that need the upgraded torque tube clamp and not the manual's?

2. Anything else I should look at doing in addition to the gearbox rebuild while I am in there?

no need for the clamp..... rebuild the shift linkage especially the front ball cup bushing. Make sure the foam insulation is in good shape.

Correct only the Autos have the "flex plate" where the Clamp is used to help w/ slippage.
New TT Bearings, yes now is the time, I highly recommend looking at Black Sea R&D' upgraded version.

Thank you guys I was looking at the black sea versions last thing I want to do is go to the bother of sorting the gearbox only to find the torque tube is giving up the ghost, I've got a good few receipts from work done on the last time around but can't seem to see anything done there on the TT.

For the sake of a few bearings it's best to just sort while I am there :-)

I've only got the car for a few months and I am wondering for you other guys with the 5-spd manual do you have to push down or lift up gear stick to engage reverse like most other manuals? Mine will seem to go in there without having to lift the gear lever or press it down to get into the reverse slot. Might be another thing relating to the linkage/gear selection slots?

Thanks for your help gent's shall get ordering some super bearings.

Tried the R&D website it seems to be down or not working for me

There is no need to push down on the shifter to engage reverse....

Thanks James that clarifies that for me, most other cars have that lock out to stop the accidental reverse gear find, had been wondering was there something missing from my gear lever mechanism.

In 1982 Porsche added a spring bolted to the top cover of the trans to help keep you from shifting from first to reverse.....your car does not have that. That spring often breaks and falls into the gear sets with potentially very bad results...

Cheers Folks!

I managed to dig out Constantine's email address and get hold of him, site seems to be back up too.

Going to sort payment now and hope it ain't too much suffering getting the old bearings out. From trawling over the past receipts I can see the clutch was done along with clutch master and slave cylinder in 1996 (40k miles ago). Hard to fathom stuff that was done that far back ago, what's the longevity for the clutch in terms of mileage?

Depends on how it is driven.... but if you minimize slipping the clutch they will last a very very long time !!! Much like brake pads which ONLY wear when you put on the brakes
