HOW TO: Start-up after 3 years dormant?
My car was running well before I parked her 3 years ago due a few tail light harness sockets becoming corroded and lights started going out. I took down the tail lamps and harnesses and didn't look back. She has been under my garage in the southern US climate and under a dust cover.
I want to get the tail lights resolved and start her back up again; however, I know I shouldn't just put in a new battery and set to turning the ignition without taking a few precautions. I realize I should drain and replace the gas along with the oil and check the other fluid levels. Unfortunately, I did not use a fuel stabilizer as I didn't think it would be 3 years before I gave it a whirl. Do you guys have recommendations about some necessary things that I should check off before turning the ignition? Thank you for any help that you can be. Nicholas |
Put some oil in each cylinder and let it sit overnight; drain the gas as well.
Then remove the JH Jet relay and fuel pump relay and turn it over to build oil pressure to 5 bar on the gauge. Put the relays back in and put a few gallons of fresh gas in the tank and start it up and let it run to operating temp ~20 minutes. Let it cool and change the oil and service as required. Nothing too crazy. :) |

ETHER. Do it.

This is excellent information. I will go through this and give it a whirl. I'll get back with you guys on the outcome.
Thank you so much. Nicholas |
Jump the fuel pump relay and see if the pump still works. If it does, turn the key and see if it starts. No need to over think this.

I finally got a day off work to dedicate to getting my car started. I drained the gas and replaced it while also adding a fuel additive for safe measure, replaced the air filter b/c a rat made it a storage bin for dog food, I replaced the oil and filter, looked for chewed wires, etc.
It started the first time and idled well. Only issue to investigate is the cooling fans. My left one came on, but my right one didn't....not sure if it's supposed to whenever the left one comes on or if comes on secondary if the temps get higher. Thanks guys for your suggestions. Your help, a little precaution, and prayer did the trick. Nicholas |
