I have 220 as well, and originally red sport seats........now replaced with heated 8 ways. The red was dyed black and just looked awful. I would have restored them but a new full leather interior in tan was too good to resist.

Kolbjorn S:

No noticable noise on low speed. In my opinion, not a hijack, just a question in regards to 220. Anyone else notice any noise?

I'll also see what I can find on the different weight usage and effect.

Simple,,, jack both rear tires up off the ground simlutaneously. Spin one, if the other turns in the same direction (and not opposite) then you have option 220.

As I recall, my '87 a/t had LSD. My '86.5 is a later install, used part from 928 Int'l. If anyone goes that route be aware that they do wear and you might want to have your mechanic refresh it, particularly if you have an interest in autocross or track--regardless of what condition the vendor says the part is in.

No.

Easiest would be the options list--in the owner's manual or on the sticker under the cargo area carpet/padding.

My sticker doesn't show the 220 option, however it is installed.

The fact is, I didn't think it had limited-slip when I bought the car (No 220 code and it just didn't act/feel like both rears were pulling).

It was not until I finished a complete Royal-Purple fluid change, I grabbed the one tire with both hands and rotated it quickly and forcibly in both directions (they had been counter rotating), it was than I heard and felt the diff. clutches lock/unlock (?) and notice both rears were now turning in the same direction. Thinking it was a fluke, I test ran the car in "D" and "R" while on jack stands, with the engine off and the trans in "P", I could no longer get the tires to rotate in opposite directions.

After the diff. oil was changed and the car run on the street, I can no longer counter rotate the rears while on jack stands and the car now feels like both rears are pulling in a manor one expects from a limited-slip unit.

My 1985S US version auto has it. Was $595 according to the window sticker. Not had an occasion where I've felt it come into play that I could really tell. But I'm still glad mine has it cause I know its a great option to have!

My "85 came with "Canadian" packaged options including LSD and heated leather seats. I have no option list posted in the car or elsewhere, only the original bill of sale which I also have. All original factory stickers are still in place and pristine. My impression is that this is the way Canadian 928s of that vintage were imported (without option code lists). Mine is also has 5 speed, sport seats, factory alarm and of all the trivial optinos to list on the bill of sale...a coin holder.

Bottom line, there may be many LSDs here in the frozen north where one might be tempted to drive in snow.

My 944, now sold, had LSD as well and would have been useless in the snow without it.

A great option.

Best,

It was standatd on the GT, the 89 GT that is......

What model year was the transition to automatic diff (option 221); I know at least the '90 S4 has that, what about GT's - from above it seems most GT's are (optionally or standard?) equipped with 220 which is the 40% mechanical diff and really a lot simpler in construction than the automatic one.
