Hello Angus,

Nice to see you here.
So, which one as its engine replaced, wp0zzz92zjs841708, wp0zzz92zjs842181 or wp0zzz92zjs842192?

thanks for the kind words Gents and a big thank you to you Angus for giving me the opportunity to restore what is indeed a special 928.

thanks for sending me the info on the front springs Samuel, its not in my WSM either.
I interpret it as some had been fitted with the harder springs, IF they needed replacing -for whatever reason- they COULD be replaced with the 1xbrown spring
why would Porsche PET list the orange rated spring - 928 343 511 12 with the M code for CS/SE and still make it available to buy only 7-8 years ago?

For the 928 S4, Clubsport version, only springs from group 1 should be used. Some vehicles from the zero series had been fitted with harder springs (1X orange). For a replacement of this type, change the right and left spring (1X brown).

I will look into the alternator, but again why would Porsche list the alternator on PET with the M code for CS/SE?
I know the rad fans are on all the time with the A/C on but would that current draw alone need the standard S4 alternator?
my guess would be more to do with a standard S4/GT possibly having heated seats, sunroof, electric seats and A/C which if all used probably would need the standard S4 alternator, but the SE only has A/C so would be OK with the SE/CS alternator.

cheers
Phil

I was looking back at this SE's history and it was originally supplied by the OPC JCT600 LEEDS, which is now Porsche centre Leeds.

had been looking over the web to find a picture of an original rear window sticker, and then a couple of months ago I was at my local OPC for a concourse event -not entered, was just looking- and a guy with a lovely 924 had one in his window.
he let me take a picture and after searching many company's found one who would reproduce it -most said the Porsche logo was copyrighted.

just stuck it in the window this weekend and I think it makes it look a little more original, just need to leave it out in the sun for a few years to get that faded look....

For me, only prototypes have been fitted with harder springs and I think that an SE has regular springs.

A production CS (with AC) is a little lighter than a regular S4 (around 70kg), but an SE is not by much (around 50kg). Especially at the front, the only lighter part is the AC compressor.
In the workshop manual, it is specified that olders 928s without AC have the softer front spring, so I think that is consistent that a production CS has also a 1Xbrown marking springs.
For a SE, I suspect this is the same setup as any 928 with sport suspension.
Roger, could-you, please, check what kind of springs are fitted to your SE?

Regarding the alternator, all the CS that I have seen have the regular one, and if I'm correct, Roger has confirmed that his SE also.
For olders 928s, it was specified that a car ordered with the AC MUST have a 88Ah battery, so this may implies a stronger alternator also.
M197: Stronger battery
M573: Air conditioner

Anyway, there are mistakes into the PET regarding the M637.
Well, in fact, the PET contains informations on cars that were not produced to be more precise.
NO production CS were made without AC and they have listed the parts for cars without.
I have the only pricelist made with this model, and it specifies that the car has AC.

The pricelist (from April 1st 1988) indicates that a production car has two side mirrors and AC.
Everybody knows the pictures of a red CS registrated BB-PW 180 with only a driver's side mirror.
Also, the German press car used for most tests was registrated S-JX 5390 and has also one side mirror.
But I'm 90% sure that the first one was a 1987 prototype and that the second was the first 1988 "production" car, which was in fact produced at the end of June 1987, before the specifications of the production cars were fixed.

The second 1988 "production" car was also produced at the end of June 1987.
As were the two US specifications cars...

Remember that the CS was introduced around March 1988.

Please let me know what you find!

Great work Phil. Really need to see the car now as it does look concourse. Loved my 928 and miss it so much, Italian cars aren't really a substitute.

P.S. I've got my Beetle back on the road for you to have a shot. Fitted a new passenger side turbo, so should be run in a few weeks.

Nice work Phil, well documented

I was interested about the spring references. I checked my SE and the front springs are coded a brown/orange colour, probably more brown than orange

Mine is a very early chassis number first registered March 88

Could you post a picture of yours, are they a bright orange that is clearly identified ?

According to PET the M637 springs are orange.
All others should be brown.
I will check my SE this weekend.
