Good idea!

Amsoil 20W-50 Zrod because:
1.) Carries good oil pressure even if very hot weather 100°F
2.) Has Zinc/ZDDP in appropriate amount
3.) Supposedly provides long-term, internal protection from corrosion if in storage (if you don't drive your 928 all year.)
4.) My chief 928 mentor did not say anything bad about it

Cheers to all, John

Only heavy weight synthetic oil should be used in the 928 engine.

No telling what I'm using in mine.

^^^^^^^I've got Randy's engine apart, at 240,000 miles. Randy drives it like he stole it.^^^^^^^

The rod bearings look like they got changed 2 months ago and the cams look fantastic (which is extrememly rare for a GTS engine.)

Whatever he has been doing is working!

I'm currently using Brad Penn 20/50 in customer cars.

God help me for posting to this thread.
Royal Purple 20W-50.
Changed from Mobile 1
Why? Love the color. Better pressure in hotter weather, heavy stop and go traffic. Love the color. Doesn't use any oil between changes, Mobile 1, had to add a quart every 1000 to1500 miles. Love the color.

Regards,

Royal Purple HPS 20w50
- Purple
- Appropriate zinc content
- I was a fan in my rotary days (I was on the "Mazda is wrong to recommend against synthetic in turbo rotaries" side of that discussion)
- I can get a case from Amazon pretty easily and pretty reasonably priced
- I saw a few folks on RL had had good results with it

3-in-one sewing machine oil.
Allows my engine to rev faster.
Much better miles per gallon.
Cheap to buy at Wally World.
Comes in small handy cans that I can keep in the glove box.
Super nice gold color.
No zinc so my bearings wear really fast.
Makes the guys at Blackstone labs mad.
I can also use it to lubricate the teeth on my paper shredder.
Because Greg does NOT recommend it.
Comes in handy if you run out of KY.
Not made by Amsoil

When returning from SITM June 2016, I stopped at a Walmart close to Pittsburgh and no stock. Hope to get a few jugs when returning from Frenzy.
Any recommendations/suggestions?
Stop at more Walmarts until you find one with stock, and stock up.

You could probably call ahead to Walmarts along your route.

Mobil 1 15w50 because of the ease of accessibility and ease on the wallet at Walmart. I also generally add Rislone to boost ZDDP (because it makes me feel good )

I've always used synthetics in the recommended weight, either 15w-50 Mobil 1 (high ZDDP) or 20w-50 Torco SR-1 (high ZDDP and 'cause Greg said so!)

Also, as Dr. Bob mentioned, synthetics have superior cleaning ability. In less than 20k miles, my engine internals went from yellow/orange tinted to looking like new.

I use exactly the same. I add a half bottle of the zinc concentrate to every change. My engine has run very well for 9 years. I wouldn't think to change the formula.

Brad Penn 20 / 50
Read waaayy to much about oils a few years back, and this one seemed to fit the bill, particularly on the ZDDP levels.
I understand Greg likes it too....
And it's green. And it says "Racing" on the container...has to make the car go faster....

Oh, and Amsoil gave me a cardiac several years back when a friend suggested it for my snowmobile, and on a cold morning I thought my engine seized. I'm not a small guy, but that sucker wasn't moving until I hairdryered it for a couple hours. So...maybe a little too thick.
Sled was fine after going back to the Arctic Cat house brand.
But I digress.

Can't believe I'm the only one but here goes...

Rotella 15W40 Triple Protection (T3) because:
  • it was recommended by other owners
  • usually on sale somewhere
  • meets SM requirements and features ~ 1200 ppm of zinc and 1100 ppm phosphorus, and
  • reward code under the cap

Castrol GTX 20w50 with STP Oil Treatment added for ZDDP content.

Reason because we don't have much choice in 20w50 oil for gasoline engines here. Plenty available for diesel trucks in 20w50 but don't like to use that.
