Default Dash code display help needed.

Hello, I'm new here and just acquired a nice 89 S4 5spd. I have message (fault code?) on my digital dash display. Does anyone know what TYP-NO. 04 6 means? It correlates with my fuel gage not working. I fixed it once by resetting the code by disconnecting the battery for another issue. Thanks for the help.

That's the boot-up message, indicating firmware rev level. Happens when cranking/starting causes voltage to drop too low. I see that when my battery is failing. Clean all the power connections, and the grounds particularly the one on the firewall near the pedals. If that doesn't solve it, you'll want a new battery.

Congrats on the '89 S4 5-speed. If it's a genuine S4 5-speed that's not a GT, it's a rare and quite desirable car. Share some details and pics when you can.

And welcome to the group!

Same here. When my battery gets low in charge (common issue with 928s) if it's not on a charge tender, I get this code. After charging up the battery, I don't see it again.

Thanks to all. I'll get the battery tender on there tonight.

And Tucson, a battery tender / maintainer is good for keeping a charged battery charged. As you are getting indications that your battery is low on charge, put it on a battery charger. A tender does not provide enough amperage to give an uncharged battery a full charge.

Follow up on this. I have had this issue continue for a while even after the use of a battery tender, then a real charger. Still had the issue pop up from time to time. I finally decided to get a new battery and today the code returned after I went out for a 30 minute drive. Could it be a ground issue? I cleaned the cable connectors prior to the install of the new battery.

This didn't look like it was followed up on so I will have to ask if you cleaned all your grounds first, replaced ground strap at battery (yes the ends can look clean but the cable under the sheath can be completely corroded)? Checked the condition of your 14 pin connector and associated cable(s) going to it? There is a diagram here (in the 928 section)with all of the ground locations to clean. Tested the alternator output?
