6-speed behind a LS/SBC Renegade in a 928
Since we have come out with our kit to install a Corvette T56 6-speed into a 928, and then our kit to convert an automatic trans 928 to the said-same 6-speed; I've been getting a lot of calls from Renegade Chevy 928 owners.
( I apologize if the Chevy conversion offends you, if it does, please turn the page. Don't know how many Renegade Hybrid owners are on this forum, maybe we will find out.)
To each Renegade owner that has called, I have explained it is entirely possible for us to mate our transaxle to the LS/SBC Renegade setup, but that our kit AT THIS TIME WILL NOT.
The issue is the LS/SBC motor is smaller, and I do not know where Renegade placed the motor (with the 928-to-Chevy motor mount adapters they supply) so I do not know how long to make my driveshaft and torque tube.
Then there is the bell housing... Renegade uses the Chevy bell, we use the Porsche bell. I would just need to make a different adapter. There may be other small clutch items, but nothing that is insurmountable.
I've called Renegade and they seem pleased with the idea: If I had a kit for their customers it would provide a stronger trans for them and I think they'd like it.
BOTTOM LINE: I need to borrow a Renegade Kit-equipped-928 for a while (about 30 days) to set this up. Hopefully someone who wants the 6-speed, so once I have finished we can just leave it in there and let them drive it away.
What I usually do on these "let me use your car as the test case" is I do not charge for labor, only the parts. Same deal here. You get a 6-speed in your 928 for the price of the parts - no labor charge.
If you are that guy - please contact me. My phone number and email addresses are below.

Does Renegade kit use stock torque tube and everything after it without any modification? If yes, then front end of stock tube is simple zero point which can be used to verify changed needed to 6sp kit.

All you would need, after this, is a set of vintage Cragers and you would have upgraded your 928 to a Camaro.

I am making no value judgments here. I am in the after-market industry. We modify ours cars. Where that line in the sand is between "acceptable" and "too much" is unique to each owner.
Yes, they use the stock 928 TT and driveshaft, and have an adapter plate that adapts the Porsche TT to the Chevy Bell Housing.
We use the Chevy Trans and TT and aluminum driveshaft. We have to chop the Chevy TT (it's too long) and we have an adapter that converts it to bolt to the Porsche bell housing. Its a weldment. We use the Porsche clutch and flywheel, and retain the 928 stub shaft system so you can still service the clutch without removing the engine or trans.
Worth noting is that we retain the 928 rear suspension completely. I have seen some corvette transaxle swaps that were done by swapping in the complete IRS from the 'vette. We feel the Weissach rear suspension is better, and we retain it, so its really still a 928, just with a different trans.
Anyway, like I said, a modification to our kit to make it fit up to a Renegade Hybrid is certainly do-able. I have tried to figure it out without a car here, but no-go. Really need one here so I can measure and make certain of my parts.

I've done 4 6spd swaps.
For the SBC motor you need a stock Vette 2 piece bell housing and a rear cross member like I have designed. Torque tube is stock except for the position of the shifter.
My crossmember grabs the lower control arms from below, allowing more forward positioning of the trans.
Hope this helps

Thanks, Dinsdale.
I knew it could be done (that was never in question). I'm looking for a Renegade Hybrid owner that wants to let us develop onto their car in exchange for free labor.
But thanks for posting.
