What a sad and yet also uplifting story! You are obviously just the right person to be the custodian of the car, and I've subscribed to follow your progress, and offer any input I can along the way.

I stripped mine to a the same degree, and you can see from my sig that it's also an '82 Weinrot 5 speed.

What a great story! I can see your the perfect steward for this car, you're already looking, and feeling sad for other neglected 928's that you see, could it be an obsession?

Nice story about the previous owner and car, and seems to be in very capable hands now. Welcome to the shark tank. We'll be following your progress!

Awesome story! Make sure to familiarize yourself with the new owner thread at the top of the page, as there is a ton of great info there. Also, get acquainted with our great 928-specific vendors of new and used parts. They, and this community, are the only reasons I dared take stewardship of my car.

Such a great story, you are literally doing God's work on this one.

FYI oil pump is on opposite side of the block from the AC Compressor. Most likely source for the oil you see there is cam cover, TB tensioner or mineral oil from the AC suction/pressure hoses (and likely all three are contributing.)

@Dave928S - very nice car! It's nice to see a photo of the end game.

@zekgb - thanks for the info. I'm dying to dig into the motor, but am forcing myself to work on the more mundane things first.

I've been on the road for the last couple of weeks and leave again tomorrow, so no shop time for me, but I got a bit of work done at the house today.

I broke down the gauge pod today while conference calls tried to suck the life out of me. It's one of the great benefits of working from home. Looks pretty good from this side:

Nothing too surprising here besides the bent needles. I thought I had been extremely careful, but I guess not. No worries - I have replacements from my great stock of parts. Some chunks of the odometer gear popped out too. That had stopped working in the whopping 15 miles I drove the car before tearing it apart.

Let's see here ... what would spruce this up a bit?

After following Dwayne's guide on odometer gears I now have the odo matching. Does this count as odometer fraud?

I also have a brand new FPC which I think I'll use despite my original looking mostly okay.

Next up will be trying to figure out how to separate the plastic cover so that I can polish it up and then respray the black coating. Seems like there's no great consensus on what paint to use there, so perhaps I'll have to experiment a bit.

Nice upgrade to the 160 mph speedometer. I'm following along as I'll be changing out mine at some point.

The only concern I have is that this car is very sentimental to you and has been kept largely original. Since the hardest part of fixing the odometer is done (taking it apart), why not just fix the gear and leave the original speedometer in place? It looks like a very nice '82 and keeping it original cosmetically with updated parts (like the rebuilt lower ball joints, etc) may be important down the road.

Unless you plan to drive over 85-100 mph all the time and the difference between going 85 or 100 or 120 mph is important to you, then ignore everything I had just said.

Keep us posted! Following your thread closely. Very inspirational.

A friend of mine took the 80 to CnC a while back. Upon arrival he said: "That was fun, never driven that long with a speedometer pegged before".

With 70mph speed limits I can honestly tell the judge I thought I was only going 15 over.

I've replaced my MPH speedo with a metric unit and it doesn't display correctly. I think the impulse signals are different so you might run into this issue too when you fire up your car with the 160mph speedo.

beautiful story, you rock!
I'll be following along. I just took delivery of an '82 wine red myself.

quote of the year after removing front fenders (post 14) "She looks a bit like a wet cat now, eh?"

I totally hear what you're saying, but I have a method to my madness. Here's my philosophy: Gary's vision was to keep the car stock except for some key modifications: Replace the interior with an all leather interior, replace the 85mph speedo that he hated so much, and exchange the US spec headlights and running lights for the euro set. He had already bought everything, so I'll implement his plan.

Hrm. I read one thread which said that this swap would work just fine, but I guess I'll have to do more research. I have a signal generator that I can use to compare the two. I'll try to do that when I get home.
