Wisconsin Joe summarized the "in case I decided to contest it" part accurately. In the event you do go to court to contest a ticket and the issuing officer is not present, the ticket will often be dismissed as you have the civil right to "confront your accusers". I've contested a number of tickets over the years, and in most cases have had them reduced (speeding to noisy muffler - a non-moving violation, even though the muffler was stock and not noisy) or dismissed - in college, took an audio tape of the traffic stop where the officer was being very disrespectful to the 18 year old "punk" in the Porsche (it was a 914) and my case was that if his view or opinion of me was so jaded from the first contact, how could he have been impartial in me being the one he stopped. Not only did the judge dismiss the ticket, but the officer got a stern reprimand about his disposition to those he has sworn to serve and protect, and I got followed around every time I got in the car for the next week - obeying every single speed limit, stop sign, lane change with signal to the letter is tedious work I'll have you know.

I have lots of stories, but then don't we all?

I also drive for a living - national tech sales in the digital printing industry - and get a lot more calls in per trip and fewer missed flights than most, doing it my way Almost rented a 991 for the trip from LA to Fresno today, but couldn't talk the Hertz lady into a reasonable upgrade cost - rats. Having not done the LA driving experience in a number of years, the folks out here today were some of the worst drivers I've encountered in a long time. Tractor trailers in the left lanes when the road is clearly posted that they should only be in the right lanes, lots of cell phone texters, Prius drivers going 20 MPH slower than everyone else in the left lane they decided to occupy, while the lane to the right of them is completely empty, and then they flip you off when you pass them on the right. If I were a cop, I could write my monthly ticket quota out here just issuing tickets for "failure to keep right, except to pass". The lane-splitting motorcyclists are the ones that have it figured out here - too bad it was 107 degrees at times. Now I'll get off my soapbox too.

And it varies from state to state.

In general, a driver can contest any citation in court. For most stuff, simply showing up in court and asking nicely will get the charge dropped one level (from 15 over to 10 over, for example).

In this particular case, however, the cop made it pretty clear that the charge had already been reduced from what the actual offense was.
So showing up in court probably wouldn't have accomplished anything.

And "Rant Mode" on (I drive for a living. My workplace is not a racetrack)

It's not necessarily a "racket." Speed is the second biggest factor in traffic fatalities (distracted driving is #1). I see stupid people being dangerous on a regular basis. They often have no clue how close to an accident they actually are. Whether it's their own inability to stop or maneuver in time, the vastly increased chances of someone cutting them off because they are coming up so much faster than they should be, or the chances of them startling another driver into a bad move I have seen accidents or very near accidents from all three.

They are idiots. I can take my 928, or my Cayenne for that matter well over 100. If I do it where I am not certain that there aren't any cops around, meaning a wide open, empty road, then I deserve any ticket I get.

The streak is over.
Got nailed today. Guy was ahead of me in right lane as I came over a hill.
I slowed down and got into the right lane, he slows down and turns on his lights while still ahead of me, then makes dramatic weave over all lanes and back to make show of pushing my nose off the road.... I’m already on the shoulder, not sure what super cop was trying to do.

He jumped out of the SUV with a look like someone had just put a turd in his mouth, lol.
I knew the gig was up, the 928 was a high value target for him unfortunately.

His trip around the car wasn’t to admire it, you could tell he was looking for something else to pile on.
84 in a 70 was all he could muster.
Flow of traffic on I-64 being 80 mph, 24 hours a day, of course.

Yep. There were 7 or 8 of us on the BRP enroute to Sharks in the Mountains and we were... rolling right along. Oncoming LEO went past, he shot a U, we all pulled over... says: "Slow it down, please." "Yes, sir" we said.

I think it was a ' Catch 22', but maybe.
I was turning left out of a parking lot onto a two lane county road at night, I didn't see any vehicles when I pulled out, but as soon as I did, I saw headlights in my rear view right on my ***, so I mashed the go pedal, in fear of getting hit, it was that close!
The 928 performed well!, then red and blues lit up, son of a bitch!, I pulled over, (i noticed there were two police vehicles that stopped behind me), cop asked for ID, he looks at it, asked if I know xxxxx, I reply yeah, That's my son.
He hands me back my drivers license and leaves.

In New Jersey, local police have to go to court ON THEIR OWN TIME ( they DON'T get paid to sit in court). My Dad, a State Trooper, told me ALWAYS go to court...The police HAVE TO SHOW...Get the Prosecutor off to the side. Plead out, Pay the court clerk and go home...The cop sits in court all day, unpaid, waiting for the case to be called..When he asks about his case, He's told " That case copped a plea hours ago"...Once they realize that a ticket means they waste a day off in court as you cop a plea, you start getting more 'Warnings' than tickets...As long as you 'cop out' before your case is called there's no court costs...( at least here).
My 928 DID get me off one time...I got stopped for 'No license plate lights' ... He takes my papers back to his car, then finds out that "HISTORIC " cars with "QQ' plates CAN'T be stopped for "Mechanicals" , ONLY 'Moving Violations',So he comes back and gives me a ticket for " Delaying Traffic" in a 1983 PORSCHE 928 4- door sedan!!!... I go to court and point out to the judge that in 1983 Porsche made EXACTLY ZERO 4-door sedans. " How can I be breaking the law in a car that DOES NOT EXIST?? He (the cop) is looking at the car from 15 feet away and DIDN'T NOTICE that there's ONLY ONE door on the driver's side?? Does he REALLY think I have 3 doors on the other side??? Didn't he notice that the ticket was printed up WRONG???"
Asked for dismissal as "No True Bill" and the ticket got tossed at 4:30 P.M. ( court started at 9.AM) So 'Dudley Do-Right' spent his day off in court only to be told by the judge "Make sure your ticket is accurate before you bring it into MY court and don't waste MY time again"..
Same thing happened in Pa. Computer identified my Dodge Discovery Conversion Van as a 2002 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup..WRONG VEHICLE. "No True Bill" Ticket tossed.
. I also like it when they miss spell my name on the ticket---Jay BAKER, instead of Jay BARKER..."He is holding my license IN HIS HAND and he can't copy a common 6 letter ENGLISH word??? That means EVERYTHING else on the ticket is 'questionable'...Again " No True Bill", ticket tossed,,
BUT YOU HAVE TO GO TO COURT...
