auto transmission fluid
The S4 is having its transmission serviced with a fluid change and filter replacement.
Given its been a few years since the last time I did this project Im curious if theres been any more recent recommendations on the transmission oil to use.
Appreciate your inputs

IIRC the book calls for DextronIII, I've been using DextronVI for the past few (6) years w/o any issues as the Dextron VI supersedes all prior versions.
And.. I am not looking for another "what Oil type" thread, it's what I use and I'm happy w/ it

I asked Greg that question (Dexron VI) a couple years ago. His response is here at post #12.

This Spring when I flushed, I switched back.

Dex III is still available?
Funny, when I had my GM car serviced at a dealer years ago (Applewood in Mississauga - great place!, I asked my service advisor about a tranny fluid service with the newly released Dex. He recommended I stick with the original Dex, as " my clutch plates were soaked in the original fluid", and I likely would not realize any benefit. I ended up trading in the car a few years later when I lost 4th gear in the 4T65E tranny (a common problem) and the repair cost would almost have exceeded the value of the car.
But YOU, you'll be just fine.

Dexron III is readily available at just about any parts store, Wal-Mart as well.
Valvoline, Mobil, Havoline, Coastal, as well as house/store brands are all on the shelves.
I just filled the Red Witch up with NAPA house brand Dexron III. She's happy.

Dexron is a GM brand-name, and GM established the standards that fluid had to meet to be sold as Dexron. GM no longer publishes or maintains any standards for any Dexron other than Dexron VI.
Any manufacturer can label anything that they want as Dexron III...

You've been doing this for years, Wally. What do you use? Just curious.
I was a little spooked when Bill Ball had his recent trans problem. It was an old post from him when he switched to VI that I first thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try. I'm sure his 300K+ miles, 1/2 mile burnouts, etc., had nothing to do with it.

Sorry but I only own "real" 928's, so have no need for ATF other than for power steering. (Just trying to see if Roger is paying attention )
I switched the Suburban and STS to Dexron VI some time ago. I would not hesitate to put VI in a 928 auto if I had one...

I run VI in my cars. It doesn't seem to have affected them adversely.
I though that I had read somewhere that VI was the new and preferred synthetic replacement for III. Is that not correct?

Some word salad for the day.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEXRON
I did not know that it something says it is Dex3, it's a crapshoot as there is no license or firm that guarantees it anymore as compliant. It's an abandoned trademark/standard.
You could I guess, legally bottle Vi and label it as III, because it "meets" the standard, but whatever else it does..who knows.
