Default Engine out WYAIT

So I am preparing my M28 engine to swap in my 79. This was removed from my 81 and ran very well. Compression numbers are fantastic. While it's out, I am doing the timing belt, water pump and oil pan gasket. I will finish the engine using my new motor mounts, clutch and rebuilt CIS injection. My question is....

What else would you recommend replacing prior to install?

Thanks

Guy

Due to the age I would do front and rear main seals, oil pump o ring and seal, as well as the cam seals.

Update the cam tower gaskets to silicone gaskets. Much easier when the engine is out and on the stand.

Brake and clutch masters or at least the grommets. Passenger side fuel lines from greg brown. '81 engine is not CIS unless you're talking about an euro s engine from an '81 car into a '79 chassis. Torque tube r&r?

do heater core hoses, and the coolant hoses under the coolant tank.

clean, clean, clean.

clean and repair if needed the firewall heat shield/sound deadening.

repair any electrical wires- like ones for the brakes.

replace, if you need to, the upper A arms. The mounting nuts to the body are hard to get to with engine in.

make sure drain flap on firewall below HVAC fan unit is not plugged up.

Just using the long block from the 81 and transferring the CIS over from the existing car. Clutch master and coolant reservoir done already. Tube may not be a bad idea. Thanks

Okay so am I crazy for NOT doing head gaskets? While I dont have a lot of history on this engine I can tell you that compression was incredible. All signs seem to indicate that someone has been keeping the engine serviced well. Not a bolt broke and all the gaskets I have encountered seemed to be replaced at some point. Car had 110

is the cold start the same on the early CIS cars as it is on the US 81 long block heads?

since you are swapping bottom ends, why not just get a 5 liter short block!

yes, crazy for not doing head gaskets. why not since its out on the stand right now. probably would be ok, and compression is not the indicator of an issue, its the leaks that are more likely as it fails.

At this point, Yes, you should do the head gaskets.

It would be a shame to get everything back in the car and a month or two later blow a head gasket.

On CIS cars, it's just a crossover pipe but it the actual castings are the same for all practical purposes.

The slope is slippery indeed. I am glad I did it. I see nothing to indicate any problems but now wondering if I should get the heads done. I am really tempted to draw the line in the sand and just reinstall them

I was in your shoes a few days ago and decided to get the heads refreshed. After all the labor I put into getting the engine out, it was decided it was best to get the heads done. After all my 928S is 31 years old so its time. Problem is finding someone who can do the work correctly. Thankfully DaveK9 gave me a good lead on a machine shop, but I'm always apprehensive these days as its hard to find good service.
