Default PSA: Cam lobes not centered to lifter bore

I don't recall noticing this before.

As you can see in the photos the cam bearing is centered in the housing.

Well, you are saying that is normal? How does that work?

Yes. Normal with "flat" tappet lifters. Look at your cam lobes and you will also notice they are not perfectly square ended, but have a taper. Both help to reduce lifter and lobe wear.

That was my first thought, the offset keeps the lifter / valve rotating. Then I recalled the controversy of using 944 heads due to the lifter bores / lobes not lining up.....

The lifters are NOT flat, nor are the cam lobes, they have a taper to them.
If the lifter is flat, it's garbage.
This is setup this way to ensure that the lifter keeps rotating resulting in a much longer life of the parts.

That's why I put flat in quotes in my reply above, but then there is this....

you have my attention now...

it's like an endless supply of "euro" heads if you guys can make 928 cams play nice with the 944 heads.

stock 944 camshaft from 82-85 has the same lift/duration as the 85 928 euro S...and I was able to get 160hp at crank (136 wheel) through a stock 944 head with that mild cam, 9.5 cr, 91 octane and like 32-34* max advance at WOT...so the flow is there...

Incorrect. To put an end to discussion I just checked one S4 and one S2 lifter. Both are ALL FLAT. However the cam lobes are offset to make the lifters rotate.

aren't they supposed to have something like an 0.005" taper (higher in the center than the edge)?

Yup, they are. As the cam lobes have a slight taper on them as well.

The are offset like NASCAR.....made turn left. Check out that cutaway video of a bike head on YouTube. The spring will start visibly rotating when the rpms go past 10K.
