16V - Where does teh O-Ring for the Camshaft Seal Flange Go?
I received a set of perishable parts for my camshaft replacement and included was a camshaft seal flange o-ring. I did not see an o-ring on the flange on disassemble. Where should this o ring go? Behind the flat side of the flange, against the bearing plate? In front of the flange next to the distributor scre gear? Or on the flange itself?

On the cam front bearing support there are 3 O ring type seals,
one little doughnut looking part thats about as big as a dime,
the next is a collar seal this is what i think your talking about, its about as big as a 50 cent piece.
this part is put into the inner area of the spacer that runs inside the radial seal,
if you pull off the front cover the inner collar will also come off,\
remove the woodruf key first.
carefully remove the radial seal and then this part will come free.
The thrid o ring goeas around the outer bearing guide collar its about 1 1/2 in diameter and its fat.
I would suggest to use Dow corning 111 on all O ring seals

This might help. I've highlightes 10, 16, and 11:
10 - This one is the most obvious, goes on the ouside of 12 to seal the cam housing opening
11 - Goes on the backside of the flange
16 - Goes inside that collar that is held in place by the front cam seal
#10 has two different part numbers depending on the engine.
If you don't have Dow Corning 111, Sil-Glyde is available at most auto parts stores.

Now that is solved, does anyone know why the 944 models use the clear plastic seal between the camshaft and the flange instead of the thin O-ring insde the flange?
The groove for the O-ring is present on the flanges for the 944s....
Makes me....crazy.
Ok, more crazy.

Thank you kindly all! #16 was my missing item. I am also very thankful that the bearing plate can remain intact to put this one on.
I am using engine assembly lube on the seals.
Edit: Could someone let me know the name of item #18 in the diagram above? I need to make sure that is not misplaced.
Thx to Greg for making the gaskets I used on the cam tower.

# 18 is the Radial seal,
the inner collar fits over the cam snout,
then the Radial seal is tapped into place

Got it. Thanks. It was hard to tell from the picture based on what I was holding in my hand. Thank you kindly Stan.
Good news! I've got the camshaft replacement buttoned up. Now to the cam gear and timing belt work.
The camshaft replacement was a very tough job for me personally (engine in car). Removing the lower tower bolts was an incredibly tedious job. Removing the gasket from the head was another time consuming task. Really not fun at all. Had to remove a few more parts like the fuel rail to get access. I'm not sure I'd do it again. End of my rant.
