Assistance from the experts :)
Hi everyone,
I've been looking a long time for a 928 i can afford (which have been few). I am finally in the market for purchasing one (seriously, i'm gonna get one). So someone approached me from craigslist with one they had for sale that could use some work. I was wondering if I could get some expert opinions...the pictures aren't fantastic, i apologize. I would grateful for any advice. He is asking $5500, the quarter window is smashed but still intact. Here is a description of what he described:
just purchased a week ago....it’s the best 928 i have had of the three I’ve owned. doesn’t have a battery. never tested anything. car ran three years ago and stored inside since. windscreen crack straight down center, i believe. dash is cracked. i have one key from porsche. fits locks on door and rear tailgate. PO never tried to start car. he had key ordered thru porsche. it has no head on it...so hard to turn in key holes (no grips) apparently porsche sells a key head for it—to get extra $30 from you? guess u could use vice grips. belts and hoses look good. tires are good. never tried brakes. i think a tool was dropped at the edge of the quarter window and it shattered, but is intact; i didnt ask.
i have not even taken it off tow dolly, yet. likely you will need to flush the tank and clean injectors an bleed brakes. they sell pasha fabric, now, btw.
i bought bc it was a manual transmission and car wasn’t trashed.
im in virginia
good car. lots of potential. i have no interest in it.
i would never touch 928s since im strictly aircooled, but this was is a decent one. it’s also a ROW rest of the world model, european delivery, but no longer has h4 headlights.
If he is a rennlist member i hope he realizes I mean no disrespect by posting this. But I want to be smart when purchasing one, and considering I've never had one, I don't know what to really look out for as much.
Any help you guys can give would be awesome...or if any of you are in the New England area and have a manual transmission 928 that you are lookin' to sell...
Thanks guys!

Here's my rough estimate to bring back to respectable:
Purchase Price: $2k
Engine Work: Motor mounts, gaskets, seals, rollers, TB, WP - $5-10k
Interior - $3-5K
Exterior - From the pictures looks 'OK'. Maybe a good detail ($500) $could make it a 10 footer.
Total - Worst case - $17k ish...
**Edit this assumes you do the work yourself!**
Are you ready for that?

I wouldn't offer a penny over $2k and that's being generous. Do you know how to work on CIS fuel systems? CIS fuel injection is great but they hate to sit. It mucks up all the mechanicals and orings. The WUR looks in bad shape from what I can see. Interior is shot.

Thanks for the insight! I will keep looking. It's hard to be patient this long, though.

White '79 Euro
I inspected this 928 4 years ago. It was really rough then and from the looks of it, hasn't improved. It did run then, but I didn't drive it...in fear of needing a tetanus shot.
It's a interesting spec '79... White over Cork & Pasha, Euro, 5-speed, No AC (from factory), and sunroof (because of No AC, I guess).
I think Brad (checkmate) meant to say, BEST case.
Wish this one could get into the hands of a buyer w/a full resto budget. Thats really what it needs, and deserves.

Yep keep looking. Plan to budget 20kish to finally have a driver quality example. This can be by acquiring a (running and driving) example for around 5k and adding $15k of labor and parts over time. I am a big proponent of the 5 year plan. Take your time and slowly restore as your time and budget allows. Or keep looking and save up for a driver quality that is ready to go. If your open to any model year, tranny and color combo, then there are plenty to chose from under $20k. Just be sure to get a PPI done first. Plenty of 928ers in your area that could lend a hand there. Good luck!

Last Dec I bought my '85 Euro for $19K
When all said and done, I'll have another $6-7K in it.

I will have a non-federalized 85 euro twin dizzy automatic coming up in the next so many weeks. It will be in good running condition with top end refresh, TB and WP, motor mounts, all fuel lines and power steering lines etc. It has nice full CanCan leather, except dash leather is pulling away from defroster vents, and will be a good driver. It was a paint to sample and interior to sample special order car that was originally German delivered. It was a graphite metallic color but is now black primer. It has been painted several times with some replacement panels. It has No structural damage. It will need a complete strip down and refinish. Probably looking for around $7000.
