One somewhat hesitation I have regarding this car is, who is Rennsmith? Anybody know about their on 928? Being in northeast and has a collector's piece, why not send it to New England for ...?
This one just popped-up this morning. I haven't had a chance to look at it yet. I'll do that later this afternoon or evening. I may know something (non-material) about it.
Water pump that is charged $350 makes me think it is a GEBA unit and not Laso.
Best case. Or it could be a $175 rebuild that was marked up 100%. This - ~100% markup - is something I've see on invoices before. (Since I haven't looked at the listing, that statement is based solely upon what you wrote above rather than what I may observe and opine upon later.)
Laso plastic impeller WPs can be had for ~$250 - that's what I paid a few months ago.
I just became aware of Rennsmith - was out to dinner in the 28 a few weeks ago and was approached by a gentlemen. He was surprised/happy/etc. to see a 928 out an about. He told me about Rennsmith (he stores his racing Corvette there) and that they happen to have 2 928s in the shop right now being worked on (perhaps this Black GTS is one of them). I haven't had a chance to check them out yet. He gave me the owners card - Ken Smith 201.704.5096
This Mendham car is 15 minutes from me - I think I might contact the owner to check it out (not that I am a buyer). If anyone else is thinking of doing the same, let me know and maybe we can coordinate.
I agree that anyone can buy a Laso unit for $250, but shops don't charge that when they "supplied" the pump. However, seller CarlP did answer to me recently on the auction that they used appropriate Gates belt and Laso pump.

What is up with the steering wheel leather - that ain't right for a seriously low mileage GTS.
That's an aftermarket steering wheel wrap. He stated that he wanted to protect the leather on it. Probably to avoid future wear that would lower its value, like he did with the intake tubes, substituted the NLA tubes and using aftermarket ducts instead and saved the originals.

It has served its purpose - he should have removed it before taking the picture.

- low-mileage mechnical odometer is always suspect. Trip odo at 000 makes it more suspect.
I’m not saying it isn’t pretty or that it isn’t well-executed or that it shouldn’t fetch a nice sum.
For whatever reason “collectors” place a premium on low mileage and “original condition” and this car may be TMU and is, objectively, not ‘original.’

Yeah, the German add also states that after 25 years, of not being used "standzeit," the car needed a complete overhaul for which 51.000 in invoices are available.
The seller, Markus Schenkel, seems to have been dealing in above average condition 928s for it seems to me like about the last 5 yesrs.
I almost bought a GT from him to keep in Europe and wanted to send it to worf928 for normal services. (Yes, Dave's work is worth shipping internationally for!!). But, he insisted on doing the waterpump timing belt himself.
He seemed new to 928s to me back then, and so, I dropped the discussion and moved on. Basd on my discussions I would not bother to contact him about another car.

Nope. That's not it. Wheel wells can be cleaned to look better than new (ask Red Flash he's done it. )
There's a telltail 'mistake' visible in the engine bay picture: the bolts for the fenders are not painted. Occams' Razor says that the fenders were painted off the car and then bolted-on whereas, at the factory, a coat of paint is delivered after the fenders were bolted.
I do not know if 100% of the factory paint was done with fenders on or if some was before and some was after. But, it is impossible to paint bolts and then bolt them without leaving tooling marks. Furthermore there's a fibrous washer under each bolt that always has a coat of paint on it. I've seen enough documented-untouched 928s with painted bolts and painted washers to convince me that the bolts were painted after being bolted. Ergo: These bolts were removed and replated. Why would you do that unless you were repainting with fenders off? And if the bolts were unsightly then the rest of the paint would have been too. QED.
Again, from the (small sized) pictures it looks well-done if not done ****-retentively with an eye toward reproducing factory-original appearance. On the other hand, you never know how good a 928 is until you take it apart.

Maybe one of you has it stashed away in your garage or know who does? Or have seen it here or will see it in your searches.
My dad bought this car new here in Colorado and owned it for 9 years. I learned to drive in this car.
My dad passed away in March and while going through his stuff I stumbled on maintenance records and a set of keys. Didn’t know the VIN until then otherwise I’d of tried to track it down long ago.
I’ve already had some friends do some searching and we know it hasn’t been registered for at least the last 5 years. Honestly, it’s probably been parted out long ago. I’d still be interested in having the shell if anyone knows where it is.
If you know of any other good groups to post this on, please do.

"Looks to need everything" may be an understatement.
But the listing says: "have new key, but doesn't fit." So...there is that.
