Salvage title, but the damage looks very light. The interior is beautiful. This could be a good snag for someone who needs restoration parts. Does anyone know the car or owner? It's not in the 928OC registry.

Having just dealt with a wrecked car, it may not be the owner's fault. It doesn't take much damage for an insurance company to total an old car - especially something like a 928, which would be exceptionally expensive to return to original condition vs. the market value. Since the car was hit, the owner had no choice about getting the cops and insurance companies involved, which means he couldn't avoid the Salvage title and the accompanying pain of getting the car recertified and insured.

As you point out, normal insurance values for 928s are such that a bird pooping on them will result in a 'total loss' as far as the insurance company is concerned.
At this point, anyone who isn't knowingly willing to risk the actual market or replacement value of their 928 should get a guaranteed value policy.
If you've got 'normal' insurance and get a light hit, you might as well just bring it home and deal with it out-of-pocket.

+928 on agreed value.
Several years ago a buddy of mine had a mint 30k '89 GT that was hit hard in the front by a state truck as he sat at a stop sign. It was deemed a total loss (IMO it wasn't, but that's a different story). He spent nearly a year fighting with the insurance company and the adjuster over the value of the car. At the end of the ordeal, he settled for thousands more than the initial offer, but thousands less than the car was worth prior to the collision. He also wasn't able to negotiate a buyback of the car, and off it went to a dismantler, which was the real tragedy.
After the time, effort and stress involved with fighting with the insurance company, he learned a valuable lesson: Always insure a classic car for agreed value - as well as any car that you place a higher value on than KBB.
And for those who have agreed value policies, keep those values current with appreciation. These days more than ever with the 928. It's easy to get in the habit of simply renewing auto policies every year without reviewing the agreed value. I generally update my agreed values by $10k on an bi-annual basis.

While I have several classics insured under agreed value policies, the 928 for me perfectly fulfilled a gap no other classic car could: A summer work daily driver, with all the modern amenities, yet sufficiently reliable, sturdy and comfortable for such duty. I can't think of another classic that offers that, plus timeless, exotic looks, all to a high level for the price point of a very nice S4 (~$18-22k). But... this means no agreed value insurer I know of will cover such use. So it's my only classic insured along with my other ordinary DDs and I will just absorb the risk myself. It might be a different story with a high-end, low miles GT/GTS, but the S4 I find is the sweet spot for what I want to use it for.
