I completely agree with you there. If you are not comfortable with the mechanic/shop that did the work then better to do it yourself for peace of mind. However that does bring up a good point about all us DIYers. For example I just did my first TB/WP on my '84. 100 miles in and so far so good. But by no means should that install confidence in the next buyer if I were to sell it tomorrow. However I do plan to own this car for at least another 30 years (knock on wood). In that time I will have done this job 5 more times. At that point buyer confidence should be higher. Now having said all of that, if I were to sell it in 30 years I'd take it to a reputable 928 mechanic at that point just to have the their name associated with the maintenance. So Dave, Stan, Greg, Colin, Sean, etc...any you guys plan on wrenching on these things in 2048?

Yep, looks like the bottom of the license plate holder says Willhoit. Great color!

Really? No 1989 S4 have their original digital instrument cluster? My 21k mile '89 has documented original cluster. How about you '89 owners?
"This very clean example is 100% original except for the sound system and no changes were made to interior. 197,000 showing on replaced instrument cluster but car is younger in miles. No 1989 928 has its original cluster (known failure point) so I replaced it with one with high miles that works.... "
Just to add a data point. I was told my cluster was replaced on my '89 and the Carfax shows possible but unlikely mileage increments.

Only 1300 miles in 1995
jump to 57k in 1997 - almost 56k miles in 2 years
61k in 1998
72k in 2001
112k in 2002 - 40k miles in 6 months
then exactly 1 mile the next two years.

I will never know because of deceased previous owners, but maybe there is truth to the claim of faulty instrument clusters.

Current mileage:

RedFlash provided an answer and you responded. But, I want to expound...

With very few exceptions every 928 brought to me in the last ~15 years with records of a timing belt 'just done' has had issues that required either immediate remedial work or scheduled-soon remedial work. I keep some of the timing belts from these cars to hold-up alongside a 17-year-old factory-installed belt and a couple of 6-to-8-year-old belts as a show-and-tell exercise when explaining to a new 928 owner why work already done has to be redone by me. RedFlash can attest, as he's seen the belt display. Of course, he's never had to have the talkin-to since he's never had a 928 where the last belt wasn't done by me.

A recent case in point is the BaT car a couple of pages back with the 'just-done' belt service that didn't include (at least) the two most important parts other than the belt. And let's not even get started on the r134 conversion.

Boy, isn't that the truth. I often find mechanics fail to replace the tensioner arm bushings, don't rebuild the tensioner, and in the case of cars with a tensioner light, they get bypassed about 20% of the time (wtf were they thinking?!) ... my son nearly lost his engine in his 85 car because the belt walked forward and shredded itself down to 50% within 3000 miles of the most recent belt change because the old worn tensioner bushings were left behind. I gladly spend the time needed to do a full inspection and replace any suspect parts if I don't have full confidence in what was done. And yes, the same with R134a, but at least that just makes you a little warm until you get the bill for a proper fix.

This looks interesting and it's close to me if anyone gets serious. No affiliation.

Well, with the limited info provided by seller, it looks better than "good" condition, however odo slot in ad says 45,000, while seller says 60,000 miles I wonder why, either way it looks good. Also I wonder if it is an 86.5?

Great color combo, raised hub steering wheel and no rubbies is sweet!
TB/WP in 2011 though. Looks like paint work has been done too.
Thoughts on this one?

That's a plus, means the new owner will know for sure it's done correctly.

Where? I'm not disagreeing, just curious since I'm obviously missing it.

I would easily go into the mid 20's on this one.

Both front and rear bumper covers look a shade off to me.
