I've overhauled both the rear dampers and sorted out the ride height so it's now running at the factory setting
The bodywork is now taking place, I have one rear GTS arch attached and am working on the other. I expect by the weekend to have the other side completed.
Front and rear bumpers are off the car and repainted
The remainder of the body is being prepped for painting
New manifolds arrived and have been getting modified for RHD use. These are set to be sent for ceramic coating next week
I have a big parts order to place to cover worn seals / guards / badges etc as part of the restoration
I also have to order wheels, decisions decisions. Wheels will take 4 weeks to arrive once ordered !
I expect it to be fully painted in the next 2 weeks.
Tony, When my $4 went in for paint I put in a GTS rear cover with the reflector and deleted the rear wiper, wing and bumperetts as well as the body side moldings. Never liked the plain rear end much! Both look good though.
Hi Marti. Good to see another 928 in Edinburgh. If yo see a black s4 buzzing around town then that is likely me. Interesting project you are doing. I think I'm going to have to do one of my rear quarters at some point due to rust on the side with the fuel filler. The PO did a repair several years ago and it's starting to fail. There are also several spots around the window etc.
Hi Mike, I have spotted a black S4 in town once or twice so might have been yours. There also used to be a black S4 parked up around the Newington area however I have not seen that for a while.
Replacing the the quarter is a hell of a job but worth it took me double the time I thought it would but I would do it again given the choice.
In general progress has been slower than expected and the restoration more detailed than expected.
Some observations about the work I have been carrying out
The rear arch change was very time consuming to do properly. It probably took 50-60 hours a side including removing the new arches from the GTS shell, removing the S4 arches and fitting the GTS arch. Then another 10 hours to paint them. If you were paying for this work to be carried out you would be just as well paying the extra amount to buy new panels from Porsche.
If you are changing the colour of your 928 it is impossible to paint the door shut near the hinges for either the shell or door if you are using an average paint gun. Not even Porsche managed to paint this area effectively, the original paint is thin and patchy. The solution if using the average type of paint gun is to remove the door and paint both separately.
The level of work required to paint these cars properly cannot be underestimated especially if you are making a colour change as you really have to remove all trim, bumpers, lights etc.
Spending time on the detail does pay off as the results speak for themselves.
