1988 928 GTE (one-of-one)
Something I found while looking for something else on Theo's site.
http://jenniskens.livedsl.nl/Evolution/928gte.jpg
360 bhp... apparently a factory one-off.

And the armchair experts were wrong. The GTE is real and fantastic!
Sadly, there was a poorly researched and written article that had some glaring inaccuracies which were jumped on by a few that did not do their homework.
I enjoy doing proper research and documentation... The GTE is in fantastic condition and is a true factory prototype "one off" with a fantastic backstory.
Never underestimate Porsche's willingness to be creative internally in their design studies and/or the ability of high end buyers to get what they want from the factory or Porsches suppliers!
Gearbox # 00006
From the owners manual:
Interior:
All of the rare original bits and pieces remain with the car:
The car has a Porsche development body "Aero" package that was later sold to American International Racing (AIR) and some Kremer development parts (strut brace and aero mirrors) that are exceptionally rare but did appear as factory installed options later on a few other "special wishes" cars. The installation of the body kit timeline is not yet verified.
The Proper Club Sport wheels have been sourced and re-fit with period correct Pirelli P7 replica tires although the car was originally delivered with Bridgestone tires.
The GTE and Club Sport graphics were supplied by Porsche but installed in South Africa after delivery.
I purchased the GTE with the assistance of 928 CS/SE expert Samuel Fournis of Le Mans, France. I am also indebted to Rob Edwards for his research, verification of build sheet and supplying the correct Club Sport wheels and steering wheel.
Lastly, the GTE in its current state:
Most of this information and more has been posted elsewhere on Rennlist, but this thread was incomplete without closure.

I'd call it "remotely possible, but highly doubtful."
I'd want to see a current COA on the VIN from the factory.
Going to guess that the 'authentication letter' is fake.

My 89 has the M018 option, Sports Steering wheel with elevated hub -30mm. Number of 89's with this option 505, number of 80's to 95 cars with this option 4264. Doesn't say anything about black leather with red stitching.

Right, except in other thread there is link where someone claims 018 option means that. Other wild claim is that C00 is No delivery; Germany. Not intended for or built as a customer car which is as obvious BS as anything anywhere ever.

Two glaring faults( as I see it ) with that "so called " GTE }
A) The single outlet tail pipe ( standard 928S4 in 1988 ) , the 1988 Club Sport had the twin outlet pipe , same goes for the 1989 GT had the twin outlet tail pipes , so you would expect this so called GTE to receive at least the same as the Club Sport & GT & not just the plain old 928S4 single outlet pipe
B ) The 1992 / 1993 year type 17" dia Cup 1 wheels , these wheels were not thought of in the 1980's , the first Porsche road car available to the world market to get the 17" dia Cup 1 design wheels( excluding the centre-lock 959 wheels) was the 1991 year type 911 Turbo ( 3.3L ) , then in 1992 the 928GTS received the Cup 1 in different widths & off sets to the 1991 911 Turbo , same goes for the 1992 & 1993 year types 968 ( 17" dia cup 1 wheels were available as an option )
It would be interesting to see the production date markings on the inside of those wheels & I do mean raised "cast in" markings not someone with a hand punch faking a date decades later
Personally I think its just a 1988 928S4 manual with some Kremer add on bits ( these add on bits age badly in my opinion ) & then in the 1990's or so it received the 17" Cup 1's
