928 2 piece rotor solution . CUSTOM HAT OPTION for 928S4 or GTS

1 Attachment(s)
Who would be interested in a 928 custom HAT from RacingBrakes.com.????
i think the costs are in the $800 range for a set of hats, but the rotors will last , 2-3 times as long as the stock solid rotors, PLUS, you also save about 7 lbs per rotor by going to a 2 piece.

this rotor hat would allow you to run the GTS diameter rotor, or slightly larger, 13" rotor, and with a GTS caliper or 964T caliper, (small short pad), you can bolt on the 13.5" rotor (348mm). running the GTS diameter rotor (322mm) is easy as making .3" spacers that go under the calipers and then all you need is the GTS mounting bolts. (2 each caliper for the radial mounts)

Im talking to RB.com now and they are interested in making them for us, if we are interested. any takers?? this would be for 928 or 964T owners!

Mark

Big thanks to Mark for bringing in the idea with different brake options for 928 community and we will fully support his endeavor.

As I said earlier, same hat can be used for 304, 322 and 330mm rotor (for 996). Anything larger than 330mm you will be in the 14" (355mm for 997) category, and would require a larger hat with larger mounting PCD.

That's Great info. I understand now. so, this is a no brainer for the S4 and GTS crew or the S4's that want to have a GTS like brake .(same diameter rotor). AND, if you want that little extra racing edge, you can go to the 330mm rotor like im using now.
having the rotor and the hat from the same company is a BIG advantage. wish i knew of this before i got the hat i bought ! (ill probably change the hat as well, as the non-hubcentric fit , is not racing quality and durability.
The Hat is very light , and saves 5-7 lbs if i remember, on each side of the car. AND, doesnt transfer all the heat to the hub which is a big plus too.

Here is a reply to 993 thread with a brief summary of RB two piece rotor advantage. You will also note that with center mount, the hardware was set well below the disc surface so you never had to worry that the pad bottom may hit the hat mounting flange like traditional surface mount design.

why do the rotors rings offset where they assemble? i feel that would cause some headaches in machining added possibilities making flatness difficult.

This is RB's patented center mount design:

1. Same disc can be used for left and right (uni-directional)
2. Admits cool air from both inboard and outboard so the rotor can run cooler
3. More balanced brake stress than conventional surface mount design.
4. Track proven to be the most durable rotor in the performance industry*

as I said it in a mail to racing brake I am interesting with the 304 mm solution as regulation in saloon car france do not admit more than 320 mm.

I am staying for the price range

With the same hat, other than three sizes offered for 928, you can mount to following disc sizes that are machined from the same casting:

D300-03 318x30 (Lexus 400)
D300-04 322x30 (VW/Audi 17Z Cayenne Brake kit)
D300-05 318x28 (Boxster)
D300-06 315x32 (Ferrari 456 Front)
D300-07 310x28 (Ferrari 456 Rear)

With RB center mount feature, the rotor offset will not change regardless of disc thickness*. In other words you can assemble 322x30mm (VS 17Z kit) disc for a lighter weight rotor w/o requiring a new hat to compensate the thickness change like traditional surface mount design.

In fact, we offer "lighter" version two piece rotors (380x32 vs. OE's 380x34) for GTR for people who don't track their cars, so they don't have to drive around the street with heavy rotors.

Lindsay Racing in Ok. City used to offer a 944T alloy hat that adapts 993 TT rotors to late 944 (and GTS). Last I looked, around $300 a pair.

Do you make the Cayenne 330x32x69 offset?

I've made many adapters using that rotor and a few one-off Wilwood hats that were expensive.

Let me see if i get this straight.

With this option, I could mount a GTS caliper and run as big as a 330mm rotor? Sounds like AWESOME!

I'm interested, but need to understand the costs we're talking about (and would prefer to hear it from RB directly). Is the cost for hats alone, or does that include a rotor as well?

I just put full set of brakes on the Coke car last fall, so I think I'm good for this year, but these opportunities don't always come along.

GregBBRD 03-24-2016 12:37 AM

Is there a matching rear for S4?

James Bailey 03-24-2016 12:45 AM

I do not think they have worked out the rear E-brake situation..... but really should :) even if it means a pressed in steel liner.

James Bailey 03-24-2016 12:46 AM

Just thinking outside the mailbox :)

all you would need is a 4mm spacer so I would think the standard GTS bolts would be fine.. its basically what I did when I went from gts rotors to 330mm rotors.

But GTS is not the same as any other Porsche, but the 964T ( c2 965turbo)
so how would that work?
