Shifter misaligned

Shifter misaligned
The first thing I noticed when the car was shipped a few days ago was that shifter is misaligned. At resting position it sits in the 4th and 5th gear gate, and in order to get to first or reverse I have to pass 2nd and 3rd gate, then push past the detent to get to 1st and reverse. Going from first to second is tricky because I have to find second gear between the detent and 4th gear. Sorry if this doesn't make sense, I'm just trying to describe how weird it is. Any tips on aligning the shifter?

the springs are inside the transmission....no adjustment of the shift lever will change the loading to the 4-5 gate. Porsche really only expected you to use 1 st gear when starting out in the morning

Wait a minute, so normal resting position is at 4th and 5th? If this is true then I'm totally shocked. Right now 2nd and 3rd feel like they have no gate, I kind of have to hunt for them.

none of which will change where the springs hold the shifter when at rest.... it will still be in the 4-5 gate. Now you can adjust where that gate is and it is possible you are hitting the side of the opening in the tunnel/console as you go all the way left for 1st gear.

What year is your car? As far as I know, it is normal for 84 and earlier cars to default to the 4/5 plane when in neutral (mine does). I'm not sure if the 85 and newer cars do the same.

On the 85 and up there is a "centering spring" that keeps the Shift lever more in the 2-3 position, you feel a spring when moving to the right for 4-5 shifts.
Normal shifting would be to push up out of first with slight pressure to left and lever goes right into 2nd, pull straight back for 3rd. 4th and 5th require pressure to the right out of 3rd.
There is also the Reverse spring (usually the one that breaks) that requires a sharper push left to get into R and 1st.
I've been told never leave the manual parked in 1-R or 4-5, I leave mine in 'N' and use parking brake
