928 Euro - 1980
Been lurking for a while and considering if I want to take the plunge into 928 ownership. Found a single family owned car (passed down twice) that seems to be an 80 Euro (engine code M28/12). It's running and I do plan to get a PPI done if I convince myself to buy it. Is the M28/12 truly a 300hp power plant like many sites seem to allude to? Was this a rare thing to find in a base 928? It is a 3 speed auto.
Owner has kept the car in for service every year or 2 to a local Porsche specialist and the last service was an entire Fuel system replacement to the tune of over $4k.
Just trying to get some advice on if this a decent year/engine combo and what major issues I should be looking for, if any, above & beyond the FAQs.
Thanks!!!

Yes the M28.12 is the correct engine code for the 928S euro in that year. The M28.11 was for the manual and the M28.12 was for the 3 speed auto. It's a 4664cc 16valve and rated at 310 crank HP (some sources quote 300). Engine number should be in the range of 92AO80xxxx. Standard Euro and US cars in that year were 4.5 litre, with the 4.7 litre only in the S.
The 4.7 litre is a very strong motor, and my Euro S doesn't disappoint when it comes to performance. If the car ticks all the boxes of a good PPI an 80S would be a good choice.
Definitely having a knowledgable 928 mechanic do a PPI is essential
If the CIS fuel system has been refurbished (replaced??) it should run well, and will have taken out of the equation an area where you can have persistent gremlins ... but you should seek some clarification of exactly what they've done, because that sounds a broad statement and could mean anything. 'Replaced' would literally mean new WUR, Fuel Distributor, Injectors, Fuel lines, etc etc. ... and I think is unlikely to be the case.

The receipts state "replace fuel pump, filter, screen, replace right back #1 injector, replace hose to fuel pump and in-tank fuel pump. Replace fuel distributor & injectors." This spanned 2 services both in 2015.
It does fall in that naming convention you stated.

OK .. that sounds promising and suggest it's been given a decent check. If they haven't already been done, the other fuel lines are well overdue for replacement ... the two over the RHS cam cover, and the one in the RR wheel arch area. A good PPI would pick up what still needs doing.

M28/12 is a fantastic engine without any silly computers etc and the fully (almost) mechanical CIS works very well when maintained.
First thing I would do if not done is to replace the 2 rubber hoses on the right side of the engine that feed fuel to the CIS. Mine looked good but snapped as soon as tried to remove them (stone hard).

Correct sources quote 300 DIN hp which is 296 SAE net. 310 DIN hp engine is later '84-86 M28/21 and 22.

Pics and mileage may help with value assessment as well. Very hard to get value without viewing the car as whole.
Value is a combo of: (model/options/paint/interior/originality/maintenance/colors/interior material) - BTW colors matter - If its a Paint to sample car or rare color with Pascha it's worth obviously more than a run of the mill silver/black leather car. You are starting with a realtively rare high power version so that's a real plus off the get go.

Appears to be the somewhat rare Tabec (Tobacco Metallic) exterior color. IIRC the 80+ "S" version had the 300hp motor unless it was a spoiler delete car. Either way grab it cause she's a beauty ! T
