Default 5 speed shifter boot base loose

My 88 S4 5 speed shifter base and the attached leather boot has been loose and rattling around since I bought the car. My cigarette lighter tray is only screwed down by one tab to the center console and is somewhat loose (also broken by PO), which may be making it easier for the shifter base to "pop out". I've tried pinning the plastic rectangle below the center console tray and cigarette lighter tray when I had the radio out, but the shifter base came loose after a few days of driving. I don't find any retaining tabs under the plastic base to help hold it in position.

What is the best way to fix this problem? I've looked for write ups but come up short. The leather is in good shape, if somewhat dry. Leatherique conditioner and German Nivea helped somewhat.

If the shifter boot needs replacing, do you have any recommendations? Change out the shifter and boot at the same time? My interior is all black. That LED shift **** looked cool, if the LED bulb color could be light orange to match the rest of my lighting.

Thanks for your help!
Brian

Your shift boot has shrunk which then keeps popping the shift frame out of the console....fix is new boot new shift frame, and possibly shorten the shift lever a bit

Also you may want to check the play fore and aft (front cup is worn out) and where the lever is adjusted to when sitting in Neutral, also done at the front linkage on top of the TT.

If you want to try the 'cheap and dirty' approach, ... I had the same problem.
Pull the boot straight off the shifter and cut the shifter down. (hack saw) It's been a while, but I think I took only about 1/2 inch.
Net result is a short shifter and a boot that stays in place. Zero cost.
