Feel like a newby for sure compared to the collection of knowledge on this board.

Bought my first 928 in 2005, 1980 (the dog) joined here in 2007 after buying my second, 1983 5 spd (favorite of them all).

The only 928 experience that I have is piddling with my own cars over the years. I have dismantled 3, and bought others only for their parts. I have completely replaced the interior of the 79 that I still own. I have swapped lots of parts on these cars, even a transmission on the 79. I have spent the most money on this car by far and clocked fewer miles than any other running 928 I have owned. Not on purpose, I just keep starting new projects.

I have zero tech education
Other than being raised by a very handy fellow who taught me how to use tools, I guess I have no outside skills that would carry over.

Previous 928's
1980 "the first"
1983 "my favorite"
1979 "The Keeper"
1978 Euro "Parts"
1979 "Parts"
1985 " Son's car"
1987 "driver, sold"
1981 Euro "sold pending funds"
1985 "sold pending funds"

Since buying the 79 in 2012 most of the other cars have been a means to an end. I have tried desperately to make the hobby self sufficient financially and thus far have succeeded. When it is all said and done I will have a $15,000 1979 that will be worthless to everyone but me.

I am grateful for this board. Without it I would be driving a mustang GT or a Suburu BRZ and would be doing none of my own work, lol.

Owner/Operator of Reliance Automotive Specialties, Madison WI 1974-1981
Early pic below. Import car repair and customization. The occasional Corvette snuck in for customization too.

GM Dealership mechanic, Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac. 1981-1985

...time off, away from cars (burned out)...

Returned to cars in 1998 when sons wanted me to do a project car with them. That car was a 1978 Porsche 928. The fabrication/customization bug struck again...

Started taking my supercharged 928 to race tracks and other 928 owners would come up to me and ask "where'd you get that part?". "I made it", I answered. After that happened often enough, I decided to listen. Started 928 Motorsports to build performance parts for the 928 in 2000.

Don't do much in straight up repair and restoration. Not our thing. But modification and customization - there we go! We do offer installation of most of our kits on customers cars also.

Lots of engine builds, often more than one in the shop at a time. The 6.4L stroker motor is the most common 928 engine build we do, although we have gone as big a 7.0L

Carl,

Interesting modification to the rear hoist. Love the old picture, with the craftsman's boxes and what looks to be a Sun diagnostic scope behind the Jag.

Brian.

Those stands were needed or the Corvette IRS would rest on the hoist and you couldn't work on it.

Funny what those SUN machines cost then, and you cant give them away now...

I think that a Volvo P1800 on the hoist on the right.

Time, First 928 drive 1984, Bought my first 928 (93GTS) 2003. Currently own about 20 - notable cars - 1 x 82 Comp. Package, 2 x Weissachs, 1 x Jubilee, 1 x 86 S2, 1 x early 87, 1988 SE & 1993 GTS.
Degree of 928-specific repair/restoration experience, I know enough to be dangerous - parted out totally about 10 cars - worked as a 928 mechanic for approximately 5 years - specialized in 928 parts when I got too old to crawl around on 928's. Helped Sean (928 Docs) get started in his awesome business. Started my 928 parts business in 2005 and incorporated 928sRus in 2007.
Technical education, Hands on 928
Outside technical or shop skills which are relevant, Indentured Aerospace Mechanical Engineer plus 5 years of Aerospace Engineering College. Salesman Extraordinaire. Retired from the Aerospace Industry in 2003.
Number of 928s you have repaired/restored, Lots
Auto restoration/repair work other than the 928. Daimler, Jaguar, Bentley, Jensan, Morris, MG, Mini (the real one), Riley, Ford, Volvo, ERF, Foden, Skoda, Mercedes, VW & BMW.

Time:
I purchased my first and only 928 in October 2006, I went to look at a Corvette the guy was selling and came home with a neglected 1985s that was sitting under a pine tree.

Degree of 928-specific repair/restoration experience:
All the general maintenance items, like wires, plugs, filters, and related items. I've pulled the transmission and shipped it out for a rebuilt and re-installed it. I've rebuilt the torque tube with Black Seas Super Bearings, put in Black Sea's super clamp and checked the flex plate. I've rebuilt all 4 brakes, sand blasted, and painted. I've rebuilt the rear and I'm just finishing the front suspension, I did the motor mounts, new 3 piece cross member, and oil pan. Also, minor electrical issues. Next up fuel lines, timing belt, and water pump, plus all the little seals and rebuild-able issues along the way. I've also cleaned the entire underside of the car along the way and painted lots of little bits and pieces. Looks better to me that way.

Technical education:
None

Outside technical or shop skills which are relevant:
None, but I can read and follow directions.

Number of 928s you have repaired/restored:
One

Auto restoration/repair work other than the 928.
I did a 1971 MG Midget I purchased when I was 15. I actually still have it and it sits next to my 928. I also have worked on Mustangs, Camaros, and other vehicles over the years, plus a ton of snowmobiles and 4-wheelers.

Outside technical or shop skills which are relevant,

Degree of 928-specific repair/restoration experience

I would rate myself a 4 out of 10 for skill and maybe slightly higher for experience considering the jobs I've tackled. I've done most of the major mechanical maintenance jobs on the car in my seven years of ownership: WP/TB, Intake Refresh, MM/OPG, HVAC Blower, TT Bearings and Transmission pump (for which I had to drop the rear end three times due to my ineptitude) and just recently had the engine out to deal with a burnt exhaust valve which has turned into WYAIT hell.

Technical education

None, I'm a pre-sales software engineer/manager by trade and have literally picked up all of my auto repair knowledge from the interwebz.

Outside technical or shop skills which are relevant

Absolutely none.

Number of 928s you have repaired/restored,

Just the one I currently own and occasional help with other owners' cars here locally.

Auto restoration/repair work other than the 928

I did a bunch of work on a 95 540i Msport with a six speed gearbox that currently has 340k miles. I farmed out the one clutch job that's been required but done pretty much everything else myself. Major jobs were multiple refreshes of the front suspension, including replacing the electronic active dampers with a koni/eibach setup and two intake reseals in the 16 years/300k miles of my ownership.

Owned one (the 81) from new, 2 rescues and multiple other assists ... never been back to a dealer for service other than minor warranty work since, always done my own work. i'm not an auto mechanic, but did spend a lot of time while in college getting extra-curicular hands on for a major Itallian manufacturer back in the mid 60's - late 70's.
